Tikopia's crater lake before and after Cyclone Zoe (click on each image to enlarge).

The shoreline of the lake before Zoe. This photo was taken in the area of the subsequent breach. Swamp taro, an important
food source for the Tikopians, is seen growing abundantly. The huts in the foreground were washed into the lake by the storm.

This photo, taken after Zoe, shows the same area as the one above, but viewed in the opposite direction. The rubble in the
foreground is what remains of the huts shown above. Intruding sea water has killed the swamp taro. Unless the intrusion
of sea water can be stopped, one of the Tikopian's major food sources will not grow here again.

A closer view of the breach, and what remains of the village on the sand spits on either side. As a result of cyclone Zoe,
that part of the village that was in the present breach location was completely washed away, along with the people's ancestral
graves. Tides and storms are now attacking both sides of the two spits whereon the surviving huts try to remain.
