for an
"Awesome"
2009
Chicago Great Lakes
Racing Season

The J30 Awesome, hull # 243, and was first raced out of Chicago
under the name of "J Walker"
probably owned by a skipper of the same name. She then was moved on her own
trailer to Kentucky Lakes outside Calvert City,
KY where in 1989 Vivian found her and moved
her to Smithville Lake near Kansas
City, MO. In 1991
Bill and Vivian moved her back home to Chicago
and have her moored at DuSable
Harbor.
For 5 years Awesome had served as an after race party boat, floating sun
deck, cabin on the lake, hole in the water, and sailing cruiser while Bill and
Vivian crewed on other area boats.
In 1993 Awesome served as a loaner boat to the crew of the J30 Twilight
Zone out of Annapolis and they sailed her at the
North American Championships here in Chicago,
a three-day, five-race event. Awesome managed to win the last race of the
event.
During the 1996 NOOD, without enough boats to fill out there section, Brian Tobin "Measure for Measure" and Tom
Barnes "Whisper" along with there crews found themselves without a
section to race in. Sooo with a bunch of borrowed
sails and crew whom were new to each other and to Awesome had one Wednesday
night beer can race for practice and were off to the NOOD. Results were 7th of
12 boats in this one design race and the fires were lit. During the Verve Cup
of this year our newest sail was a 1982 Genoa.
Awesome finished the series with an 5th of 13 boats; this included one
disqualification, and a 2nd place to add to our credit or discredit depending
on your point of view.
Awesome will be docked in DuSable
Harbor for the 2009
sailing season and will be racing in the MORF Performance and Competition
series. Also the Sprint buoy, Lady Skipper series, Double Handed, and Verve
Cup, as well as some long distance port to port events sponsored by Area III.

"AWESOME" is now rounding up a
race crew for the 2009 season. Many crew
positions are open and we will have practice days on the schedule. People interested in crewing on Awesome in
2009 should send us an E-Mail.
