NP 560 was never owned by LRC, but was just sent there for work by Rarus.
The 567BC engine was actually an in-frame upgrade of the 567B. It consisted of new cylinder heads and some water pipes added inside of the engine air boxes. Externally you could not see any difference between the 567B and the 567BC. The B engines had a reputation for leaking water and the BC conversion was EMD's successful way of updating them to the equivalent of the 567C. As far as I know, all of the NP's 567B engines received this upgrade, whereas the GN did very few. Also by the time of the merger in 1970, most of the GN GP7s were considered junk, while the NPs were still in fairly good shape.
NP 556 came to the Palouse and Lewiston Branch as the primary passenger power for Nos. 311-314 around the middle of 1952; in May or June as I recall. It had a steam boiler at that time. It replaced Baldwin No. 501--which the rumor mill had it as not being able to maintain the train schedule with No. 314 coming up the Kendrick Hill! Number 556 remained on 311-314 until September of 1954 when it was replaced for three months by Q-6 No. 2256!
Let me tell you, I was just in hog heaven as the 2256 was my favorite NP steamer. Unfortunately somebody in Spokane figured that on Sundays there was a lot of local power just sitting around doing nothing, so 2256 usually had that day off and 560 or 563 did the honors. Number 2256 made her last run on 314 on December 23, 1954 and from that time until the RDC-2 B30 entered service on March 1, 1955, the train was usually handled by either the 560 or the 563. Number 560 handled the last run of the conventional train on February 28, 1955. So much for the trivia.
I don't have a GP9 roster, but the NP sure went crazy over this model, purchasing 176 of them between June 1954 (the first five went to the Camas Prairie) and 1958. The first GP9s here on the Idaho Division, other than the 200-204 on the CP, were some of the low numbered 200 class; I remember the 216 especially well; also units in the 230, 240, and 250 numbers; all of which lacked dynamic brakes. The 200s came to the Idaho Division in force late in 1955 and brought a sad end to steam power on the mainline late that year. They took over the Palouse and Lewiston Branch from the GP7s at that time too, although some of the dynamic brake equipped GP7s came to the Idaho Division in the middle 1960s.
In the spring of 1957 the Idaho Division received dynamic brake equipped GP9s 302-316 and these 15 units pretty well took over the Palouse and Lewiston Branch right up until the merger.
