More Spirit Stuff (updated 29-Jan-00)

Here's my last dyno run, two years ago. I'll be going on a dyno again soon, hopefully in a month or so. Check back for the new numbers!

Torquey SOB, ain't it? This is a DynoJet, so these numbers are "at the wheels". These were all 3^rd gear runs, as you can tell by the MPH (72).

Did I mention it's only 2.5L?

Here's what things look like under the hood. Things have changed a little. I only use two extra injectors (although the third is still visible). Boy my engine paint is taking a beating. I wish it looked as good as the old picture.

The intercooler is just out of view, directly in front of the A/C condenser. Yep, real working A/C!

Here's the "Lowdown" on my Spirit

Bio:

Bought in March 97, with blown motor, used to be owned by Randell Rasmussen who played for the NY Jets. Bought with 109,000 miles. Car currently has 151,000 miles (These last 42k have been the hardest of its entire life!)

Engine Mods:

Motor rebuilt when purchased car.

Engine stock 2.5L Turbo I, stock cast pistons, and cast crankshaft

MP Bathtub chamber head with stock 91 roller cam, 1mm oversize valves

0.020" FelPro copper "Head Saver" head gasket to lower compression

Removed balance shafts to lighten and free up some wasted horsepower.

Fully functional AC (not a mod obviously, but most choose to remove it) Now converted to R-134a

180 deg. thermostat

Trans Mods:

Stock A-523 5 speed, 3.50 gear, stock axles

Handbuilt posi by Chuck Noonan of Chuck's (Honda) Civic Center

McLeod Industries clutch. Metallic friction material with relief's, encapsulated hub

B&M Neon performance shifter

Turbo and Exhaust:

Turbonetics Super 60 turbo (converted to full S60 turbo: .63 A/R intake, .63 A/R exhaust)

K&N filter (RU 0910) mounted directly onto turbo inlet

Talon BOV with K&N filter breather (mounted behind drivers side headlight )

Custom Spearco intercooler, front mounted

3" Mandrel bent Stainless exhaust with Ultra-Flo muffler

Intercooler plumbing is mandrel bent 2.25" steel tube.

Fuel System:

42#/hr injectors (the MP +20%) Two supplementary VW cold start injectors

Stock fuel rail

Ed Peters Viper Fuel Pump

Stock computer

Car Tech Rising Rate of gain fuel pressure regulator

Fuel pressure has been dropped to 45psi above manifold pressure, using a modified (lengthened) stock regulator

Cyberdyne Electronic Fuel Pressure Gauge (which doesn't work, bad sender Don't buy these!)

Fuel and boost systems have been engineered by Tom "Gus" Mahon. Thanks for the help Gus!

Other Mods:

Custom stainless fuel lines for Car Tech regulator

Custom made Lexan air dam

Custom boost system. A tri-stage bleed: three boost settings (engineered by Gus) with Gus' Super Boost Controller for the "high" setting

Fan override (on) switch, located next to the bleed control switches behind my shifter

VDO 30# boost gauge that has been mounted to my column with a custom made bracket, as well as a Cyberdyne Fuel/Air Ratio Gauge also custom mounted to the right of my column

A single air shock mounted in the driver's side rear, to push weight down on pass front while racing.

205/60/15's mounted on 15x6 white painted Crab wheels. •Race slicks are M&H Racemaster 8.5x23x15 mounted on 15x6.5" Crab wheels.

•Mopar Performance Autocross springs, car is lowered about 1" from stock.

Koni front adjustable struts. (rear adjustable Koni shocks to come soon)

Spirit R/T front seats, (driver side 6-way power)

Sony Mobile ES 40wx4 CD player deck with front Mobile ES speakers and Eclipse rear speakers mounted in stock locations

Performance:

Best ET: 13.07 @ 107.88 mph on 13 May 98 at Lebanon Valley Dragway on 25# boost, open exhaust and slicks and race weight of 2984 pounds.

Best MPH: 108.69 mph on a 13.495 sec run on 30 Sept 98 at New England Dragway on 21.5# boost, open exhaust and slicks and race weight of 2960 pounds.

New Dyno Runs: Finally dyno'd with full boost (25psi). Dyno'd with set-up as it appears here. Result: 268.2hp @ 4700 rpm and 372.2 @ 3200 rpm. This was again on a DynoJet Chassis Dyno, and these numbers are at the wheels.

Old Dyno Runs: it was dyno'd with full exhaust and only 21# of boost (limited to 21 because of the exhaust restriction, and a leaking BOV) still made 233hp and 309 ft-lbs. of torque at the wheels.

Future mods:

I still am in need of the proper front bumper cover with foglights (e-mail me if have info)

Also still looking to replace intercooler plumbing with aluminum tube (as soon as I can find 2.25" cheap, and mandrel bent)
