This analysis focuses on technique--the steps involved in examining and synthesizing a chart--rather than a detailed explanation of each chart placement. I’m hoping it will be helpful to both new students of astrology and the more experienced practitioners who are interested in other approaches.

Chart A - Shannon's chart using birth time

Chart B - Shannon's archetypal chart

To: Part 2 . . . Part 3. . . Part 4. . . Part 5

Part 1 ... 6/5/96
Initially I disregard the houses and concentrate on the planets and signs. It’s helpful to set up an archetypal or natural chart with 0 Aries on the ascendant, 0 Taurus on the 2nd house, 0 Gemini on the 3rd, etc. (See Shannon’s archetypal chart - Chart B)

The Sun, Moon, and Ascendant are the focal points of the chart. I evaluate them according to element, then look at each one specifically by sign and aspects. Shannon's Sun, Moon, and Ascendant are in air and fire, indicating an outgoing, adventurous, person who is motivated to interact with others (air) and explore the physical world (fire). The three points are loosely sextiled and trined so there is ease of expression.

Someone with the same Sun and Moon but a water Ascendant would be more frustrated in expression, especially if either of the luminaries square the Ascendant. Water's natural caution restricts air's urge to socialize and learn from new experiences. On the other hand, a water Sun and earth Moon with an air ascendant may jump into new relationships then withdraw when water's security and earth's stability are threatened.

Shannon's Sun in Libra seeks companionship and one-to-one relationships. The Sun's dispositor , Venus, shows in detail what she enjoys and values in her interactions with others. Venus in Scorpio, or Venus (Pluto), intensifies relationships, interjecting passionate emotions, sexuality, power, crises...the need to evoke a strong feelings in others. Genteel Libra is shaded with Pluto's emotional potency.

Next I look at the Sun's aspects . The closest aspect is a semi-square from the South Node giving a fated quality to her relationships (Libra), and her interactions with males (Sun). There may be a lack of emotional security, a sense of inadequacy and self doubt, and an attraction to males who restrict her.

Uranus conjunct the Sun is unconventional and experimental, a person who separates from the family early in life to explore new paths. Friendly yet impersonal she enjoys intense (Venus/Scorpio) one to one relationships (Libra) but needs freedom to experience a wide range of contacts (Uranus).

The theme of detachment, freedom, and unconventional interests is emphasized by her Moon in Aquarius. Also noted is the Aquarius-Scorpio conflict...a freedom/closeness dilemma. Although she enjoys passionate interactions, there's an impersonal scientist at the core, never a participant but coolly assessing experiences at an emotional distance. That curious, experimental attitude propels her into the dark regions of the instinct (Scorpio) most people avoid. And because she enjoys emotional intensity but is naturally detached, she may seek extreme experiences in order to provoke some inner passion.

Someone with Moon in Scorpio and Venus in Aquarius may enjoy/attract mental contact rather than emotional closeness in relationships yet provoke crises in order to satisfy the Scorpio Moon’s need for depth and intensity.

The Ascendant is Sagittarius, the adventuress, who continually seeks new horizons from which to expand her knowledge and understanding of life. The Ascendant ruler, Jupiter’s dispositor by sign, shows the type of experiences necessary for growth. Jupiter’s placement in Scorpio once again emphasizes the theme of passion and power, a focus on life’s primal instincts.

An interpretation of Jupiter:
Seeks to develop a sense of meaning (Jupiter) through experiences indicated by its occupied sign. For Scorpio those experiences are: exploring the instincts, emotionally interacting with others (especially provoking responses from others), controlling and directing desire.

Part 2: ... 6/11/96

In summary:
Of the five placements examined so far - the Sun , Sun's ruler , Moon , Ascendant , and Ascendant ruler - two are in air, two in water and one in fire. Uranus is a powerful influence; it rules the Moon, conjuncts the Sun and sextiles the Ascendant. The rulers of Shannon’s ascendant and Sun are in Scorpio, emphasizing a Plutonic intensity.

Next, I look at the personal planets. Shannon has Mercury in Libra or Mercury (Venus). Mercury is in the same sign as the Sun, so there’s agreement between the way she thinks/communicates and her consciousness/path of development.

Howard Sasportas describes Mercury in the natal chart as an indicator of the way our mind works, how we communicate, and what we notice in the environment.

Shannon's Mercury in Libra is dynamic (cardinal) and detached (air), interested in exchanging information with others. Venus' influence as dispositor of Libra refines communication, indicating a pleasant voice and diplomatic skills. She thinks about relationships and notices the needs of others.

Her Moon-Mercury trine shows harmony between basic emotional instincts and intellect. She can communicate her feelings clearly. The trine in air emphasizes an impersonal scientific attitude.

Uranus conjuncts Mercury, and is at the midpoint of Sun/Mercury, showing an interest in the unconventional and a tendency to say things that challenge traditional views. And the trine to her Aquarian Moon emphasizes a delight in shocking others, but in a sweet pleasant Libran manner.

Although I've found midpoints important in both natal and transit analysis, too much data can be overwhelming. Thus I usually examine only the 1st harmonic midpoints of planets within thirty degrees of each other. I use a 30 minute orb for planets and a 1 degree orb for midpoints involving an angle.

In Shannon chart, Pluto is at the midpoint of Mercury and Mars (Mer/Mars=Pluto). Mars energizes and Pluto intensifies, so her mind is quick, stimulated by discussions or conflict. There may be interest or talk about the eliminative and sexual functions of the body - Pluto's domain. And with Pluto also at the midpoint of Mercury and the midheaven (Mer/MC=Pluto), this interest or communication expresses publicly, through her career, i.e., talking "dirty".

Shannon's Sun/Moon=Ascendant midpoint doesn't fall within my thirty degree rule yet it's important because the three main power points of the chart are involved. Her appearance (ascendant) makes a strong impression on others. And because the Sun, Moon, and Ascendant are sextiled and trined, the impression would be attractive and charismatic. She expresses herself easily through personal contact.

Part 3: ... 6/21/96

The planets represent basic drives and needs - what
The signs of the planets describe the manner in which those basic drives will express - how

The planet Venus signifies what one finds attractive, what brings pleasure, and what is valued in relationships with others. And as the natural ruler of Taurus, Venus also shows material values - self-worth associated with earning a living and providing the kind of comfort that Venus by sign desires.

Venus is ruler of Shannon’s Sun sign, Libra, so it is strongly emphasized in her chart. Venus in Scorpio=Venus (Pluto), combining the Venusian drive to relate and share with the Plutonic need for emotional intensity.

Attractiveness to others is an important issue for a Libran Sun. Venus's placement by sign shows the type of attractiveness valued. Venus in Scorpio emphasizes sexual attraction, whereas a Libra Venus may value beauty, stylishness, or geniality, and a Virgo Venus may attract through helpfulness and service.

The planets aspecting Venus show other personality needs or drives associated with relationships. The closest aspect to Shannon's Venus is a sextile to Mars (10' orb). Mars represents initiative, action, and basic sexual expression. The sextile is an easy blend of Venusian cooperation with Martian assertiveness. The male/female principles are in harmony, usually indicating attractiveness to the opposite sex.

Shannon's Venus conjuncts Neptune, the planet of receptivity, surrender, heightened emotions, ideality. Neptune is a sensitizing influence, dissolving ego and individual boundaries. Thus Venus-Neptune equate loves with submission and absorption, the need to merge with the partner. Shannon relates to others emotionally, as indicated by the water sign and planet placements (both planets in Scorpio plus Neptune adding a Pisces flavor). She is looking for the ideal mate and tends to see others in the light of her own needs. And as a result, relationships may turn out disappointing because in the end others don't meet up to those expectations.

Saturn can focus in on Neptune's fantasies and actualize them in the world. Shannon's career was based on fantasy - sexual fantasies on film - shown by the sextiles and trines from Venus, Neptune and Saturn to her Midheaven angle and planets. Her career was financially lucrative for both her and her investors (Taurus/Scorpio well aspected to the MC/Virgo planets).

Part 4: ... 7/1/96

Mars symbolizes energy, initiative, and drive. In its most basic expression, Mars is self-centered and anti-social, concerned with asserting personal needs in the world.

Shannon has Mars in Virgo so her energy is geared toward practical results. She is willing to work for what she wants. She is motivated (Mars) to serve others (Virgo) a characteristic that is immediately apparent after viewing one of her films.

Mars represents the basic sex drive; in Virgo it loses physical spontaneity and expresses mentally ... Mars with Mercury's influence. Although it can indicate celibate tendencies, Shannon's Mars-Pluto conjunction and the sextiles to her Scorpio planets add emotional potency. The combination of mental Virgo and emotional Scorpio, especially if the social/sexual planets Venus, Mars, and Pluto are involved, often show an interest in pornography. In any case, her libido is subjected to much analysis and effort. Mars in Virgo has the patience for routine and repetitious tasks in order to develop skill so she must have worked diligently to perfect her sexual technique.

Mars energizes whatever planet it aspects. And because Mars, as natural ruler of the 1st house, is associated with identity issues, any planet it aspects will influence self-expression.

Shannon has an almost exact sextile from Mars to Venus, which was covered in Part 3 of this report.

Mars also trines natal Saturn in Taurus, showing an ability to focus her energy. Drive (Mars) and discipline (Saturn) work together. Shannon can set goals and work toward them with dogged persistence. There is an easy flow between the ego needs of Mars and the demands of society as represented by Saturn. And because the trine is in earth, involving Saturn, Shannon is motivated and skilled at achieving material objectives.

The Mars-Pluto conjunction indicates powerful desires and a strong will. It can also indicate a great deal of frustration because the needs are so potent and demanding - what Shannon wants, she wants right now. Her actions are obsessive; once she desires something she's completely focused on pursuing it.

Shannon’s Mars sextiles Neptune so her energy expresses through Neptunian things such as film and fantasy. She may go through alternating periods of obsessive action (Mars/Pluto) and passivity (Neptune). The easy aspects between the planets show graceful movement and intuitive action (knowing what to do without having to think about it). And because Mars activates the Neptunian longing for surrender and fusion, Shannon may experiment with drugs, alcohol, or any experience that blurs structures and heightens emotions.

Part 5: ... 7/8/96

In Summary:

Basic personality drives are indicated by the luminaries (Sun & Moon) plus the other personal planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars), Ascendant, Ascendant ruler, and Sun dispositor. Look for themes emphasizing specific elements, modes, and signs/planets. However, keep in mind the most important chart factors are the Sun (path of development) and the Moon (instinctual needs).

Shannon has an air emphasis (Sun, Moon, Mercury) accented with water (Ascendant ruler, Sun dispositor). Besides the Venusian sociability of her Libran Sun, a theme of independence and unconventionality is shown by Uranus in aspect to her luminaries and Mercury; in addition Uranus disposits her Aquarian Moon. Another theme is the Scorpio/Pluto emotional intensity; with her Ascendant & Sun rulers in Scorpio, plus Pluto in aspect to Mercury, Venus, Mars, MC.

The signs may be categorized in three groups: personal, social, universal. Aries through Cancer are the personal signs, motivated to satisfy basic individual needs. Leo through Scorpio are social, concerned with interaction with others. The universal signs, Sagittarius through Pisces, are more detached and impersonal with a panoramic view of life. Note that the water signs mark the transition between phases.

Analysis of Shannon’s chart (7 placements)
Personal = 0
Social = 5
(Sun, Sun's ruler Venus, Ascendant ruler Jupiter, Mercury, Mars )
Universal = 2
(Ascendant, Moon)

Shannon has a preponderance of social signs, and is thus motivated to associate and interact with others. The cluster around the 7th house is obvious when viewing her archetypal chart (B) above.

At this point I'd check for planets in their own signs - such as Capricorn Saturn, Cancer Moon, etc. - which are energies that express strongly.

Shannon doesn't have any planet in its natural sign.
