Named for prominent community leader and rancher Benjamin Campbell in the 1850's, this city is today a thriving growing community of more than 37,000. The Pruneyard Shopping Center and Towers are the centers of attraction of this family-oriented community. The city is also home to light industry. Campbell's elementary and high schools rank in the top 10% of schools statewide.
The home of Apple Computer boasts its share of computer companies. With a growing population of 43,000, Cupertino is also home to DeAnza College, the largest community college in Santa Clara County. Cupertino's elementary schools rank in the top 4% of the state and the high schools are also excellent. Recreation including camping, boating, hiking, fishing and golfing is all nearby.
In contrast to many of it neighbors, Los Altos has gone out of its way to limit commercial growth. This prestigious and quiet community prides itself on schools that score among the top 2% in California and features a village-like downtown shopping area. Bordering Los Altos on the west is the exclusive residential community of Los Altos Hills. Covering 10 square miles, this city has a 1-acre minimum for new construction . Los Altos Hills is also home to one the county's community colleges, Foothill College. The two communities have a combined population of 35,500.
Los Gatos is located on the eastern slopes of the Santa Cruz mountain and was once home to John Steinbeck who described it as "so beautiful I am embarrassed to live here." Los Gatos is home to the affluent and has a popular downtown shopping area with boutiques and shops ranging from country style to trendy. With a population of 29,900, Los Gatos is a tranquil residential community.
Incorporated in 1954, the city has grown steadily and in recent years has become quite culturally rich. Milpitas enjoys benefits of the valley's explosive growth in the electronics and computer industry. It has an excellent prognosis for job growth and new nonresidential construction. With a population of 60,000, Milpitas has a wide selection of housing from custom hillside homes to lower cost housing. Milpitas offers better-than-average schools, plenty of community parks and wide open spaces as well as an 18-hole golf course. Milpitas is also home to the Great Mall of the Bay Area.
At just over 1 square mile, Monte Sereno is Santa Clara County's smallest city. It is also one the wealthiest with a prosperous population of 3,400. Located at the foothills of the Santa Cruz mountains between Saratoga and Los Gatos, some residents enjoy a rugged lifestyle offering a close bond to nature. Nature and hiking trails abound in the nearby state parks and recreation areas. Monte Sereno is a truly scenic place to live.
At the southern end of the county, Morgan Hill and Gilroy are home to rich agricultural fields. A naturally beautiful narrow valley, the area has many recreational lakes, oak studded mountains and sleepy residential communities. Twenty miles south of San Jose, Morgan Hill is quite rural with many ranches and some custom built homes. Gilroy, the largest city in the south valley, is known nationwide for its annual garlic festival. The two cities have a combined population of nearly 60,000.
Mountain View is located at the southern tip of the San Francisco Bay. The city is home to the top computer and electronic firms. Its most striking feature is the NASA-Ames Research Center. With a population of over 70,000, housing is a blend of single-family and rental properties which makes it a logical choice for single business people. Mountain View is home to the Shoreline Amphitheater and sports a newly revamped downtown and Chinatown section. Its elementary schools are ranked in the top 10% in the state and there are many parks and recreational areas.
Located in the northernmost tip of Santa Clara County, Palo Alto offers its 58,000 residents a trendy, prosperous, intellectual and socially conscious community. Home of the world renowned Stanford University, it was here that the computer revolution was born. The University Avenue area is a unique shopping experience which offers many boutiques, shops and restaurants. The Palo Alto school district is one the top scoring in the country.
With a population of more than 835,000, San Jose is the 11th largest city in the nation and the 3rd largest in California. Named for Pueblo de San Jose Guadalupe in 1777, San Jose was the first Civil settlement in California and the first state capital. It was also the first major city with a woman mayor and is home to a new convention and cultural center. San Jose is the nation's top high-tech growth center and ranks fifth in the nation in manufacturing. Shopping centers, museums, recreational areas and parks abound.
The city of Santa Clara is the 3rd largest in Santa Clara County of over 97,000 residents. Santa Clara is a growing city and has become headquarters for many electronic and aerospace companies. It is hoped that the newly completed Santa Clara convention Center will bring more business to the area. The Santa Clara Unified School District scores above the state average and the prestigious Santa Clara University is located here.
Once known for its popular mineral springs and lumber industry, Saratoga is a charming, woodsy residential community of 30,000. Today Saratoga is know for its downtown village of trendy boutiques, cafes and antiques shops. Elementary schools are ranked in the top 3% statewide, with its high schools pacing the top 3%. Home to the wealthy and influential, Saratoga is a stunning, modern community.
Sunnyvale is the second largest city in Santa Clara County. At the heart of Silicon Valley it is a home to may high-tech firms that have settled here since the arrival of Lockheed Missiles and Space Company in 1956. With a population of nearly 125,000, Sunnyvale is conveniently located between Highways 101 and 280 and their connector, Highway 85. It's residential areas are clean and pleasant and housing prices are moderate. Sunnyvale's Fremont High school District ranks in the top 15% statewide. With more than 13 city parks, Sunnyvale is a wonderful place to live.
