A Star is Born. . .

BACKGROUND

While we loved our first Wandering Star dearly (a ‘99 Mainship 390), she was just too small for the kind of long distance international cruising we have in mind for the next five years. Our little Mainship was great for living aboard as a small family doing the locks and rivers of the Great Circle from Key West to Georgian Bay, Canada. She took us over 11,000 miles in our six years aboard, but she lacked storage room, a proper guest stateroom, fuel range, and a proper heavy weather hull design. Retirement and Kevin starting college soon made it the perfect time to begin the quest for WS II.

And a quest it was, two years of boat shows, brokers, and marinas from Miami to Seattle…crawling around and through dozens of different models, designs, and floor plans until we all but gave up ever finding the next love of our life. It was after a frustrating day in Dana Point trying to get enthused about buying a Nordhavn 43 that, while walking the docks talking things over, that we accidentally saw our first Selene, a 43 foot trawler built by Jet-Tern Marine.

It was love at first sight!  Confirmed when Dan Fogle took us aboard Gary Parker’s Selene 47 after the ’04 Seattle Boat show and we at last saw the midship master stateroom we had heard was a possibility.  Finally, everything we wanted in one boat. A great basic design coupled with the owner and navel architect of the Selene line, Howard Chen’s willingness to customize and make the minor changes that would make her perfect, we were at last ready to place our order.

Selene’s are made in China just up the river from Hong Kong by a Taiwan owned and run company. Selene’s are sold as a very complete yacht and most everything is included in the purchase price. A trip to China was even incorporated as part of our contract, to make a personal progress check on our new Selene.  It took 18-months to build her from start to finish and another 18-days at sea before she finally arrived on board a large freighter in Seattle Harbor on January 1st, 2007.
