A Comprehensive Review of the Russian Forest and Forest Industry Sectors - Past, Present and FutureGareyev-Sheveiko-Hale

"I cannot forecast to you the action of Russia. It is a riddle, wrapped up in a mystery, inside an enigma. But perhaps there is a key. That key is the Russian national interest" (Winston Churchill, 1939). Has anything changed by 1997?
Russia is vast. So are its forests. The country spans 11 time zones. It has 23% of the world’s forest area. It holds 22% of the world’s wood inventory, including 55% of the inventory of coniferous forests.
Russia should be dominating global wood production, processing and trade. But it is not. Wood production has actually fallen to only 30% of its level in 1989 - or has it? What is going on? Has the bottom been reached?
RUSSIAN FORESTRY - A Paradise Lost? provides a comprehensive Review of the history, overview, data interpretation, industry details, volume and price trends, future demand/supply projections for the Russian forestry sector and many of its industries, and investment issues and case studies. The Review fronts up to the reasons for many of the industry’s present difficulties. It includes 16 Chapters, and 170 tables and figures in its 250 pages.

The two major authors, Runar Gareyev and Sergey Sheveiko, are both Russian nationals, who have been living and working in the United States for some years. Both make regular trips back to Russia,. They have developed a wide network of industry sources in Russia where, it is said, that reliable information appears to be so precious, it tends to be rationed. They are well qualified to filter Russian language written and verbal industry data, both official and unofficial, to produce a frank and focused Review, with discussion, interpretation and predictions of future directions in the industry. Dr. Samuel Hale, Jr, a major contributor to the Review, has experience in natural resource management throughout Russia.
The Director of DANA Publishing has visited Russia to investigate possible forestry joint ventures on behalf of a forest products company. He has also recently researched details of Russian log and chip exports to Europe, and Japan, and the growing costs of tree farm projects in the Russian Far East.
