What is GOST ?

This is an acronym that states for Government Standards. GOST is valid on all territory of Russian Federation
for indefinite time unless notified by Government Standard Agency.

How to recognize GOST ?

Example : GOST 9463-72 "Round Timber of coniferous spices. Technical characteristics"
First four digits state for order of enlistment in national standard register i.e.9463;
Second two digits state for year of ratification i.e.1972;
Text states for name of the standard i.e. "Round Timber of coniferous spices. Technical characteristics."

How to apply GOST 9462-88(……) and GOST 9463-72(…..) ?
There are three class diameters into which logs could be fit:
Small (6-8 cm or 2.4" - 3.1" for timber of Coniferous spices) (8-13cm or 3.1" - 5.1 " for timber of Broad Leaves spices)


Medium (14-25 cm or 5.5" - 9.8" for Timber of Coniferous and Broad Leaves spices )


Large ( 26 cm & > or 10.2" > for Timber of Coniferous and Broad Leaves spices )


GOST 9463 - 72 (………)
Softwood timber is subdivided according to four grades :

"Grade 1"- Primarily large logs of highest quality bucked off from a but portion of the bole. With practically no defect could be used for yielding high quality products such as aviation, resonance, rotary-cut or slicing veneer. Approximate 10 % of output of Russian timber industry.

"Grade 2"- Logs with limited ( read full description of GOST ) defects , designated for yielding assortments not included into "Grade 1". Approximate 40 % of output of Russian timber industry.

" Grade 3"- Logs with less limited ( read full description of GOST ) defects . Approximate 40 % of output of Russian timber industry.

" Grade 4 "- Logs yielded of any portion of a bole and containing maximum of defects. Approximate 10 % of Russian timber industry.
