rally from distance

In response to Senator Rick Santorum and former Christian Coalition head Jerry Falwell appearing in Philadelphia to get their followers motivated to push for the Supreme Court nominee Samue Alito, a group of perhaps 100-150 people gathered outside the Greater Exodus Baptist Church where they appeared.

smiling falwell

Our large and enthusiastic crowd with giant puppet of a smling Jerry Falwell hovering over them.  Lots and lots of noise!  Act-Up was the major organizer for the event.  LiberalOasis is usually very sour on Democrats and normally recounts depressing tales of how the Democrats blow opportunity after opportunity and draw the issues too narrowly and fail to ignite the grassroots.  Not this time!  This time, LiberalOasis feels the Democrats "get it" and are acting in unison.  If the game is played properly, Democrats can win even if Alito makes it to the bench.  If Democrats use the  hearings to define themelves as a party, they can win even if the Republicans prevail on the issue of the day.

phyllis

One of our activists, Phyllis, getting signatures.  She came on her bicycle.  Washington Post has full transcript of first day of the Alito hearings.  RedHedd of firedoglake has snarky summaries of what every participant said.   Michael of Americablog notices that Alito acts as though he's ashamed of his own views.

lynn

I had a smiling picture of Lynn, but I thought her expression matched her costume well here.  MoveOn and TrueMajority both have petitions out to stop Alito from making it to the court.

the crowd goes wild

And the crowd goes wild!  During the last PRAWN meeting, we discussed getting together a protest for the State of the Union address on January 31st.  I learned at this protest that the group World Can't Wait wants to do one in Philly!  Their demand is for Bush to step down and take his agenda with him.

radical cheerleaders

Four young women do the radical cheerleaders thing while a reporter in back of them takes notes.  Great fun was had by all!
