Settlers of Catan

Welcome to my Settlers of Catan Page. This page is still a bit new, so there isn't much here yet. The most useful information here is in relation to the computer implementations of Settlers of Catan.

Settlers of Catan Board Game and Expansions

GermanEnglishDescription
The Settlers of Catan. This is the game that started it all. Be the first player to civilize the new land of Catan. Winner of the 1995 German Game of the Year. For 3 or 4 players (up to 6 if you have the 5/6 player expansion).
The Seafarers of Catan. This is the first major expansion to The Settlers of Catan. Now civilize the islands surrounding Catan. Now all those ocean spaces do more than just look pretty - they separate you from your destination.
The Cities & Knights of Catan. This is the second major expansion to Settlers of Catan. Build metropolises, recruit knights, and fight off the barbarian hordes.
No English Edition Historical Scenarios: Alexander the Great and Cheops. This expansion adds two new scenarios based on civilizations of the past: Alexander's empire and Egypt. While this set is not available in an English edition, this set is compatible with both the English and German editions.

Other Settlers Games

GermanEnglishDescription
Available only in German The Settlers of Nurnberg. This is a self-contained game using the same game system as Settlers of Catan. In this game, you aren't trying to civilize a new island, but instead are trying to become the most influential person in Nurnberg. This game was developed to celebrate the 950th Anniversary of the city in July 2000.
Was scheduled to be released in English in 2000 (don't bet on it) The Starfarers of Catan. Now the people of Catan have taken to the stars. This is a self-contained game that allows you to colonize other planets and meet other civilizations.

The Catan Card Game Family

GermanEnglishDescription
The Settlers of Catan Card Game. You only have two players and still want to explore the world of Catan? Then try the card game, a special version of the game for two players.
Might be released
in English
some time in 2001
The picture shows the original expansion set to the card game. This has since been dropped in favor of theme sets. Two of the theme sets include the cards from the original expansion, while the other three include new cards. The English edition is expected to be published in a smaller number of sets.

Computer Implementations

There are two computer implementations of Settlers of Catan. One is a DOS program written in 1997 and the other is a Windows CD-ROM game that was released in 1999.

The DOS Settlers Game

The DOS game was originally written in German in 1997 and translated into English in 1998. It has a simple interface that displays the entire map on the left side of the screen and the user input areas on the right side. This game is available at Kulkmann's G@meBox and is distributed as freeware.

While the game was translated into English, neither the manuals nor the editor were. To compensate for this, I have written two manuals that explain how to play the game and write your own scenarios. These manuals are in standard text format and are written in English. The editor manual also translates any messages displayed by the editor (the interface for the editor is quite simple, so the language barrier is minor).

The Windows CD-ROM Game

The CD-ROM game is published by Ravensburger, a German game company. You can find a demo to this program at the funatics web site. I should warn you, though, that the demo is 56 Megabytes. The game sells for 109 DM (about $52 when I placed my order), including taxes and shipping to the U.S.

This implementaiton is only in German and the interface is more sophisticated that the one in the DOS game. I have therefore written a tutorial review of the game that is intended to give my impressions of the game and to help English speakers to navigate through the program (I don't speak German, so the language barrier isn't impenetrable).
