DC Talk is Toby Mckeehan, Kevin Smith and Michael Tait. They met in college
at Liberty University in Lynchburg Virginia. Toby and Mike grew up in Northern
Virginia as did I. Michael was the son of a Minister and all I believe grew
up in Christian homes. In their latter year at LU they began to explore
the possibility of combining their musical talents. All three were involved
in music in one way or another; all heading in different directions. This was until
Toby wrote the song Heavenbound and collaborated with Kevin in actually recording it.
They played in front of Liberty students and were surprised by the demand of their music as all
demos sold.
Nearing the end of the college years the three signed a contract with Forefront Communications and moved to Nashville where most of their music is still written and recorded. In 1989 they released their debut self titled album, "DC Talk". Thin in comparison to the three's work of late, the album was eight rap and hip hop tracks exhibiting Toby's old school rap influences. Although Mike and Kevin do serve as backing vocals their voices are limited. A young Kevin's developing vocal styles can be heard on the catchy pop track "Spinnin Round". Michael's booming church voice is shown on "He Loves Me". Yet this record still lands miles from the work the boys would go on to do. Thus by the end of 1989 what has become the greatest act in Christian Music had emerged. The name DC for DC Talk hails as Washington DC; where the boys are from. But some insist that in marketing the record they said the DC was for Decent Christian Talk, something missing from modern pop music. They have gone on to produce three more full length albums, Nu Thang, Free At Last, and Jesus Freak.
