Sunday Weather

9H Forecast for Sunday, May  1 Valid 18Z

Update @ 10:10

As noted, steering winds SSW so clearing of SC shield following front is slow.  RUC thinks it will go away, but satellite images not showing as good a clearing as I would like to see.  Not much else – winds a little stronger, enough to make a decent ridge, not enough to cause problems.

Synopsis

The system which brought all the rain is moving out more slowly than expected, but we should still get in a decent afternoon of soaring.  There is a rather sharp gradient in conditions more-or-less along the ridge line.  Should this line shift conditions might significantly improve or worsen.  PHL discussion worth reading:

.430 AM DISCUSSION...
.SHORT TERM (TODAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT)...
THE CLOUDS AND SHOWERS HAVE BEEN HOLDING TOUGH OVERNIGHT.  BASED ON
TRENDS INDICATED BY THE RADAR DATA THE LAST OF THE RAIN SHOWER
ACTIVITY SHOULD PULL THROUGH OUR FORECAST AREA BETWEEN 7 AND 9 AM.
THE BACK EDGE OF THE CLOUD MASS WILL CLOSELY FOLLOW, CLEARING OUR
FORECAST AREA BETWEEN 9 AND 11 AM.  HOWEVER, SOME STRATOCUMULS MIGHT
HANG BACK IN OUR HIGHER ELEVATIONS FOR A WHILE LONGER.

DRY AIR WILL PUSH IN FROM THE WEST FOR THIS AFTERNOON AND WE'LL
LIKELY SEE A MOSTLY SUNNY SKY FOR THIS AFTERNOON FROM SOUTHEASTERN
PENNSYLVANIA AND CENTRAL NEW JERSEY SOUTHWARD.  A MID LEVEL SHORT
WAVE THAT WAS LOCATED OVER EASTERN IOWA AT 4 AM WILL ZIP TO THE EAST
NORTHEAST.  IT COULD TOUCH OFF A FEW SHOWERS IN THE POCONOS AND IN
FAR NORTHERN NEW JERSEY DURING THIS AFTERNOON AND EARLY THIS EVENING.”

Forecast

Don’t expect thermal soaring to begin much before early afternoon.  Expect cu at 6,000 ft over southern part of task area, 7,000 feet north.  Ridge height winds 300 degrees, 15 kts, winds at cloudbase 300/20.  Steering winds 240/90.  Average lift (achieved climb) 3-4 kts.

For those wanting to make last minute discussions I will update by 10:30 this morning.
