About pheromone traps & other monitoring tools

Use of pheromone traps & other monitoring tools - Pheromone traps are often used to time the emergence of the male moths of certain species. Timing is often critical when borer treatments are necessary. When moths are first sighted in the traps, bark treatments begin ten days later. Other tools for timing insect and mite controls include the observance of indicator plants. These are plants commonly found in the landscape with showy blooming or fruiting phenology. The blooms of these plants often coincide with the emergence or vulnerable periods of certain insect or mite species. For example, when redbuds begin to bloom, gypsy moths will be starting to hatch out in that geographic area.
