VOLUME 17. No. 1       NEWSLETTER       FALL 2001

A Message from the Chairman

Welcome to the Fall edition of the MTRC Newsletter. While this is called "The Chairman's Letter", I actually write on behalf of all your Board members, and each of us is looking forward to welcoming you at the upcoming Annual Meeting on October 27th. Please plan to join us in Laurel. We will be meeting over lunch again this year. This is your chance to meet with your Board and discuss the work of your organization. Join us - your participation is important to us.

In this issue you will find brief biographies of two new Board members. We are all delighted to welcome both Colleen Prosser and Kimberly Knapp to the Board and look forward to their contributions to the work of MTRC. They are joining the other members of your Board who give so much to MTRC. It is these individuals and their devotion to the mission of MTRC that allows the organization to continue. We all owe them a large vote of thanks. Much of the work of the organization is done by your Board. For that reason, it is crucial to its future that we continue to be able to attract such excellent individuals to serve on the Board. Please consider your friends, neighbors, colleagues, and family members as possible additions to the Board. Feel free to recommend yourself, and do think about how you can contribute to guaranteeing MTRC's future.

The MTRC staff has been canvassing the sponsors to gather information on your plans, your needs, and your expectations for MTRC. This information will be used by your Board in our planning process. Please join us at the Annual Meeting for a full report on this survey of your fellow sponsors.

As our family members age, they face increasingly complicated medical situations. Often their ability to communicate their needs is limited and their ability to cooperate with medical staff may also be compromised. These difficult realities can pose problems in care planning. We will take a look at these issues from a variety of perspectives at our Annual Meeting.

We will cover all this and more on October 27th. So mark your calendars and plan to join us in greeting new Board members; expressing our gratitude to current Board members; to get an update on the sponsors survey; and to discuss the important topics arising out of medical issues.

On behalf of the Board, sincerely,
Marsha Carow

COMMITTEES

Your Board is currently in the process of forming a series of working committees to carry out the work of MTRC. We eagerly solicit your cooperation and consideration in joining one of the committees. Under consideration are the following committees:

SIBLING: This committee will build on the work of earlier efforts to enhance sibling communication and mutual support.

MEMBERSHIP: This committee will be looking at ways to "get the word out" about MTRC to increase our sponsor base and broaden our geographic representation.

FUNDRAISING: This committee will look at ways to raise additional funds to allow us to expand our services.

SPEAKER'S BUREAU: This committee will not only provide individuals who can "tell our story", but will also identify opportunities to do so.

VOLUNTEER: This committee will carry on the work of our current volunteer effort. This past year the committee has made sure each active member has received birthday and holiday cards, and a gift during the holiday season.

Naturally, once the committees get started, they will each further define and refine their specific mission. Please consider participating on one or more of these committees. The MTRC needs you - your Board needs you!

WHAT'S NEW ON THE MTRC BOARD

It is with great pleasure that MTRC announces the election of officers and Trustees for the new fiscal year. MARSHA CAROW will continue for a third term as MTRC Chairman. JIM KUSHEL has been elected to a third term as Treasurer. PATTY WOLFE will begin her first term as Secretary.

KIMBERLY KNAPP and COLLEEN SINCLAIR PROSSER have been elected to three year terms as Trustees for MTRC beginning August 1, 2001. As we welcome the new Trustees, we must also announce the resignations of two Trustees, CHRISTINE RYKIEL and DONNA RAE SMITH.

KIMBERLY KNAPP

Kim has been involved with The Arc for the past eight years. She has served on both the Arc of Maryland's and the Arc of Anne Arundel's Board of Directors. She served as the Vice President and the Treasurer of the Arc of Anne Arundel's Board. Currently she is the Membership Chair.

Several years ago when Kim was on the Arc of Maryland's Board, she volunteered to be the Arc's representative on the MTRC Board and served as the liaison between the two organizations. We are indeed fortunate to have her return as an elected member of the MTRC Board of Trustees.

Kim holds a degree in Business Management from the University of Maryland. She is a computer scientist and is presently doing web development for the Department of Defense in Ft. Meade where she has worked for 19 years.

Kim lives in Anne Arundel County with her husband and two daughters with disabilities. She enjoys scrapbooking and sewing in her spare time.

COLLEEN SINCLAIR PROSSER

Colleen is an attorney with the firm of SinclairProsser, and concentrates her practice on estate planning law. Committed to educating the public about estate planning issues, she gives free public seminars on a regular basis. In addition, she is a certified instructor of a 12 credit continuing education course, Estate Planning for Financial Advisors, that is approved for insurance agents, financial planners, CPAs, enrolled agents and certified bankers. Her latest endeavor is the development of a life and estate plan for families planning for a special needs child. The program addresses the legal, social and financial concerns of the special needs loved one.

Colleen received her BS degree from the University of Maryland with Academic Honors. She earned a JD degree at the Catholic University of America in 1990. She is a member of both the Maryland and DC bars and is admitted to practice before the US Federal Court. She is also a member of the Elder Law Section, and the Estate and Trusts Section of the Maryland Bar. Colleen lives with her husband and son in Edgewater, Maryland.

THE WHO, WHAT, AND WHERE OF THE MTRC FAMILY

One of the questions asked by sponsors in MTRC is "can you provide us with statistics about the MTRC members, such as their ages, where they live, the cost to provide the basic services?" To the right is a listing of where the MTRC members live. Continued on the last page of the newsletter are the ages of the MTRC members and a five year summary of the number of members in the program and how many have become active each year. The cost to provide the basic service for each new active member is approximately $200 annually
