(4/24/01) --Class A Top 10

  1. Pinckneyville
  2. Nashville
  3. Herrin
  4. Harrisburg
  5. Vienna
  6. Anna-Jonesboro
  7. Columbia
  8. Johnston City
  9. Carmi-White County
  10. West Frankfort

It's tough to put these teams in any kind of order since they are all pretty evenly matched. Nashville beat Pinckneyville, and Harrisburg beat Herrin. West Frankfort and Harrisburg split, but Harrisburg is ahead of Frankfort in the conference standings. Basically, any one of these teams could turn out to be #1, and nobody would be surprised. Fortunately, we have the regional tournaments to straighten all of this out.

Jed!

(4/19/01) --Harrisburg, Herrin

Julie Johnson singled home Melissa Hunt with the winning run in the top of the seventh inning, as 18th-ranked Harrisburg upset #2 Herrin on the road Monday.

Harrisburg pitcher Sloane Hertlein fanned seven Lady Tigers to get the win. Herrin pitcher Mary Kosco had 11 strikeouts.

Herrin loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the seventh, but Hertlein pitched out of the jam, getting a pair of ground balls and a two-out fly ball to seal the win.

Harrisburg is now 10-5 on the season, 4-2 in the Southern Illinois River to River Conference. Herrin is 9-1, 5-1 in the SIRR.

(4/5/01) --Lady Warriors

Better check the top ten, Casey, and Edwards Co. both have losses. Thats right, Mt. Zion no-hit Casey in a 2-0 win. Casey won the 2nd game 2-1. Ya never know in the game of softball. My understanding is that Casey arrived late, and had little warm-up time. Not to take anything away from the Lady Braves, they are a well coached talented group of young ladies who deserved the victory. as far as the Lady Warriors go, this early loss will only make them better.

Just talkin' softball,
General Custer

(4/3/01) --Lady Bulldogs

Harrisburg pitcher Sloane Hertlein threw a no-hitter Saturday, as the Lady Bulldogs swept a doubleheader from Union County. The freshman pitcher has helped the Lady Bulldogs to a 5-2 record this spring. Junior hurler Lacy Jones got the win in the nightcap.

Harrisburg starts Southern Illinois River to River Conference play this week.

(4/3/01) --Oblong

Oblong is (5-0). They have beaten Edwards County.

(3/27/01) Class Top Ten--

  1. Johnston City
  2. Casey
  3. Edwards County
  4. Pinckneyville
  5. Cumberland
  6. Harrisburgh
  7. Vienna
  8. Fairfield
  9. Norris City
  10. Carmi-White County

This is just some early season thoughts. I'm sure they'll change drastically once the season gets in full swing.

(3/22/01) --Edwards County Lions

Just giving everyone a little pre season info on the Edwards County Lions. They return 6 starters from the Regional championship team and look to come back even stronger this year with senior All-State shortstop Lacey Frankland and behind the LIC All-Conference pitching by senior Erin Pollard and All-Conference catching by junior Rachel Whitehead. They do have a new coach this year but look for them to be as strong as ever as they go into this 2001 season.

(3/21/01) --Let the chips fall where they may

I was glad to see the comments from General Custer about letting the players on the field decide who's the best. We should spend our time bragging on what they do, and let the chips fall where they may.

As for my favorite team: Harrisburg's season starts Thursday. The Lady Dogs finished 2000 at 27-8 and are ranked in the state Top 25 yet again this year. There are a lot of strong teams in the Deep South, and once again this area is going to be very competitive.

GO LADY DOGS!!!

Jed!

(3/20/01) --Casey-Westfield Softball

Casey-Westfield Softball will only have 12 players on their roster this season. Where is all the excitement? Has the mighty Casey struck out.

(3/20/01) --Little Illini Conference

Well, spring is in the air, and softball season is near. The Little Illini Conference is destined to be tough again. Defending state champs Casey Westfield is once again at the top. Don't be fooled by their losses to graduation, they will be tough. They have great players at key positions. Cumberland should be tough this year with nearly all starters returning. Edwards Co., Oblong, Hutsonville, the list goes on and on. It's one tough conference, with some good teams, and individually some outstanding players. Lets face it, several (not all) of "us writers" never even played softball, we just enjoy talkin' softball. So let the young ladies decide the outcome on the field this spring. My point being, we can brag without "trash talkin" each other all spring. So support your favorite team and coaching staff, and of course your favorite player, and HAVE FUN! Good luck to ALL, and I hope everyone enjoys an injury free, FUN spring.

General Custer
