What's the name of the dog that talked to Son of Sam?
The ineluctable Jamie Dunn provided mrlucky’s next quest when he asked, "What was the name of the dog that spoke to the Son of Sam?" The freak referred to here is David Berkowitz, a puffy loner who commenced a thirteen-month reign of terror in New York, beginning in July of 1976. His murderous spree left six dead and eight wounded.
Berkowitz taunted the public with several letters during his horrific tenure, including a note found near the car of one of the victims, in which he wrote, "I am deeply hurt by your calling me a weman-hater (sic). I am not. But I am a monster. I am the Son of Sam…I love to hunt. Prowling the streets looking for fair game—tasty meat."
The note described a brute that compelled his "son" to kill. When captured, Berkowitz related his delusion: "Sam" was a 63-year-old neighbor, Sam Carr, and his black Labrador retriever was possessed by ancient demons. The dog’s incessant howling was actually commands beamed out to Berkowitz, telling him to kill. Actually, it turns out that a bunch of demon dogs talked to Berkowitz over the years. This whacked delusion was accepted by all but one psychiatrist, Dr. David Abrahamsen, whose testimony persuaded the courts to deem Berkowitz sane and order him to trial. Abrahamsen’s book, Confessions of Son Of Sam, was integral in preparing this response.
Oh, how I long to share with you the bizarre demonology related by Berkowitz, to introduce you to the Blood Monster, John Wheaties and General Jack Cosmo! But that’s not my job, alas. Jamie just wants to know the name of the damned dog.
Harvey. Harvey was the dog.
