What's the origin of the word "Kismet"?

Kismet is a Turkish word, from the Arabic qismah, which means portion, or lot. The word kismet means 'fate'. Fate, of course, is the principle or determining cause or will by which things in general are believed to come to be as they are or events to happen as they do.

Kismet is also the brand name of a form of poker dice, similar to Yahtzee. And who could forget "Kismet", the 1953 musical based on the works of Aleksandr Borodin?
