Intoxicating beverage on Venus. It was addictive but it made conditions tolerable for contract laborers. The laborers, of course, bought the rhira from their employers for a large enough price that they were never able to save enough to buy out their contracts.
Dusty was a telepath aboard the Lewis & Clark; he was obnoxious, but valued for his ability to communicate in pictures, not just words. He was killed in an attack by Elysian natives. Rusty was his Earthside twin.
1. Born in the Ozarks, he became a jetman second class for the Harriman Line. After being blinded, he became an itinerant musician, bumming rides on his former employer's ships to various planets on the pretext of his being a "distressed spacer." He continued hitchhiking even after the Harriman Line officially banned the practice. He died while trying to control a power room emergency in the Falcon. After Baslim's death, Thorby delivered a memorized message to Fjalar Krausa of the Free Traders, instructing any Free Trader to discharge their debt to Baslim by taking care of Thorby. He was adopted by the crew of the Sisu until Krausa determined that Thorby was not born a Free Trader, then handed off to the Hegemonic Guard to have his true identity researched. He was briefly a Guard member until he was discovered to be the Rudbek heir, then taken to Earth to assume his family role. After a struggle with a step-uncle, in which he learned his family businesses might be behind the slave trade, he took control of the holdings and mobilized his resources behind finding ways to stop the slavers.
