Notes on the Gospel of John

1 John Class Notes

1.1 John 323–25

Not sure what's going on here: put not your trust in man? What does it mean that "they believed", but he did not "entrust himself" to them?

  • He still didn't relax and be off his guard, confident in them?
  • Knew that they still harbored the capacity for sin, doubt, betrayal?
  • Did not "unbosom" himself to them, to tell them fully what was going on?

1.2 John 518

This seems to be one of the "narrator" portions of John, where John himself steps in to explain what's going on (although I just noticed it follows Jesus' response, "My Father is working until now, and I am working," and immediately prior to that statement, John the narrator writes, "And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath." It's the same harrator-like comment, w/o the separate paragraphing by the translators.
