Carnivorous Plants Page

I have been around carnivorous plants all my life. Sarracinia minor, Drosera, and Utricularia grow in the land near my home as a boy. The land around us was know as flat woods with mostly pine trees. On the exposed ditch banks would always be Drosera to the point that some banks would have a pinkish tint on the sand. The utricularia would grow in the near stagnant pools of black water. You could just rake a stick through the pool and come up with a lot of the stringy plant. Sarracinia would grow at the edge of the pine stands and in the lower area were the pines did not grow. In the pines, you could find singles scattered around and colonies out in the open areas.

I have had very little success growing the plants of my youth. I now grow nepenthes, the tropical picture, also known as the monkey picture. I grow these in 30 gallon aquariums under a 400 watt metal halide light fixture. I put water in the bottom of the aquariums up to the top of the bricks that the plants set on. In the water is an air stone connected to an air pump.  The 'soil' that these are grown in is a very course orchid mixture with perlite mixed in on a 1 to 2 ratio

I am now building a greenhouse for the plants (so I can have more).  If you want to see the progress go to my greenhouse page.

I do not pretend to know how to grow most of these incredible plants, but the following links will provide you with the information and of course additional links for more information.  Take advantage of all these peoples hard work.

The Carnivorous Plant Database is maintained by John Walker.

The International Carnivorous Plant Society is an organization you should join if you have interest in CP.
