91: 149631t Induced phases in mixtures of terminal polar liquid crystals- amines and nitriles. MacMillan, John H.; Labes, M.M. (Dep. Chem., Temple Univ.,Philadelphia, Pa 19122 USA) Mol. Cryst. Liq. Cryst. 1979, 56(1), 7-12 (Eng).

The mixts. studied consisted of 2 terminal polar liq. crystals which show phase induction with the requirement that polar electron-donating and electron-accepting components to a pi system be present. Two nitriles were mixed with 3-phenylcyclohexane and 2-biphenyl derivs. All the substit- uted anilines, including N-substituted derivs., showed induced smectic mesomorphism or an induced solid phase at high concn., and expansions of the nematic range of the nitrile at <7wt%. Phase diagrams of 2 systems are given. Interactions between liq. cryst. mols. of an electronic nature can perturb the normal phase relations whether these are dipole-dipole or charge-transfer type.
