6633s The magnetic susceptibility of palladium hydride. Thomas R. P. Gibb Jr., John H. MacMillan, and Richard J. Roy (Tufts Univ., Medford, Mass.). J. Phys. Chem. 70(9), 3024-5(1966) (Eng).

The theory that the linear decrease of the paramagnetic susceptibility, xg, of Pd with the amt. of H absorbed was due to the donation by H of its electron to fill the d level and pair the spins was tested. The hydride of Pd was prepd. by alternately heating and cooling the finely powd. metal in pure H (from UH3) at 200 degrees. Small amts of H were removed from the hydride at room temp. by reducing the pressure above the substance to <18mm. No change in xg was observed. Lattice expansion was considered a more important factor than had been thought to explain the desorption phenomenon.
