Alida Valli, Walking

Anna walks her measured steps.
War is ended. Winter takes the place of war,

winter upon winter, tree upon tree,

an endless parade--
amputated, emaciated, ugly,
lining the strasse like
Viennese survivors, saluting,
capitulating on cue.

Anna walks westward,
through kilndust, through hoarfrost,
through consecrated ground,
through brittle scraps of leaves just
lying there.

Anna, lit by mid-winter sun.

Alida Valli, walking. These minutes;
this damp; this chill; this horizontal light;
this linear road--the sound of steps, her
measured steps,
no other sound.
