An essay obtained from Albert Amateau relates the possible origin of the Amateau name. However, there are several rather glaring discrepancies in his narrative. The essay is reproduced here:

ROOTS OF THE AMATEAU FAMILY
In the year 1302 in Lisbon, Portugal, a known hematologist Doctor Lusitanius HABIB Amatus, was invited by Doctor Jacobo Abravanel, physician to the royal Family of Spain, to come to Madrid for a consultation. Members of the royal family were suffering from a disease of the blood. Doctor Amatus was able to diagnose the illness and collaborated with the royal chemist in the preparation of the necessary medicaments.
On the request of the king, Doctor Amatus remained in Madrid and for more than ten years continued to collaborate with Doctor Abravanel in keeping the royal family in good health. Often during this time Doctor Amatus received the king's appreciation, in compensation as well as in expressed satisfaction. Moreover, the king had recognized in Doctor Amatus a keen business mind, and often consulted him on the condition of the royal treasury.
In 1314 the king appointed Doctor Amatus as his personal representative to negotiate with the Duke of Venizia (Venice) for payment of large sums of money owed by the Duke to the King of Spain. The Duke consented to let Doctor Amatus receive all custom duties until the amount was paid. It took 14 years for the indebtedness to be wiped out and Doctor Amatus returned to Spain. Three children born in Venezia to the Doctor and Donna Rahel had been recorded in the official archives as AMATO, while those born and residing in Spain were recorded as AMADO.
Abraham, the eldest son and now an adult, established himself as a banker in Barcelona. Eventually his two sons, Edwardo and Gilberto, joined their father in the administration of the banking operations. Throughout Doctor Amatus' sojourn in Venezia and after his return, Abraham and his sons were recipients of royal approval and benevolence.
In 1348 Abraham was falsely accused of being involved in a scheme detrimental to the royal interests and despite his insistent denial, the king continued to believe Abraham's accusers. By this time old Doctor Lusitanius was ill, bedridden, and his messages to the king were never delivered. Fervent Catholics now surrounded the king and they were continually plotting to degrade the few Jews who were still attached to the royal palace.
Abraham was so affected by the king's attitude, he took to drinking to find surcease, soon becoming an alcoholic. His aged father, Doctor Lusitanius, summoned his son to his bedside and exacted from him a solemn promise under oath to give up alcohol. To keep him constantly reminded of his promise and oath, Dr. Lusitanius further insisted that Abraham add to his surname OHEV MAYIM. Abraham ordered his sons to add the translation of Ohev Mayim (AMA-AGUA) to their surname and signatures by court order. Soon the stress caused by the king's attitude and his self denial of alcohol affected Abraham's heart. He died of a stroke.
His old father did not last long after that. He also died of a stroke. The death of old Doctor Lusitanius affected the king. He sent condolences to Abraham's family and seemed to change his attitude towards them. The family decided to take advantage of the change and petitioned the king to permit Gilberto and his family to establish himself in Amsterdam, Holland, as agent of the bank in Barcelona. The petition was granted. Thus Eduardo in Barcelona was able to mask the transfers of goods and assets to Gilberto in Amsterdam.
Soon the anti semitic activities of the papists increased, with the king's approval. The family grew frightened and decided to leave the country, even if it meant abandoning the assets still in Spain. Eduardo petitioned the king for permission to visit his younger brother, on the pretext of demanding an accounting of the assets that had been transferred to him as an agent in Amsterdam and to bring those monies back to Spain. The petition was amended, requesting further permission for his family and his old mother, Rahel, to accompany him to Amsterdam. The king must have been in a good mood for Eduardo's petitions were granted.
In Amsterdam Eduardo did everything possible to befriend the political agent of the French government in Holland. Through his influence and with his considerable help, Eduardo obtained permission from the French government for his family to become permanent residents in Avignon in the south of France. Soon he obtained permission to establish a bank in his name. In his petition for French citizenship, he translated his surname of AMA-AGUA into the French AMAT-EAU, thus the newest family surname.
The Amateau families have resided in Avignon and in nearby Marseilles since then. In 1789 Albert Jean Amateau, a graduate in law from the Sorbonne and an official in the Quay D'Orsay (the Foreign Ministry of France) was appointed Consul General of France for ANATOLIA, Ottoman Empire, with chancelleries to be located in SMYRNA (IZMIR). Jacques Michael Amateau was born to Albert Jean and his wife, Sarota de Sidi (Sephardi of Moroccan ancestry) soon after they had arrived in Smyrna. As Jacques grew up, he was tutored in French at home and had no contact with Turks. He was sent to France for his continuing education and graduated in law from the Sorbonne, his father's alma mater.
When he returned to Turkey, he realized that he could not practice law in Turkey without the knowledge of the Turkish language and Turkish law. Yacoub Efendi Saul, a Sephardi attorney, undertook to teach Jacques Turkish and the principles of Turkish law, to the point where Jacques was qualified to enroll in the law school of the Ottoman University (DAR EL FUNUN) in Istanbul. After graduation he married Miriam Franco, daughter of Rabbi Mosche Franco, and they settled in Milas, a small agricultural town in southwest Anatolia, a few kilometers from Bodrum on the Aegean.
Here he practiced law successfully and gradually was able to acquire large tracts of land which he dedicated to the culture and improvement of Turkish tobacco. He also raised large herds of domesticated animals, such as horses, cattle and mules which he exported for use in the armies in Germany and France. He sired nine children, two of whom were stillborn - Vida, Sara, Violetta, Albert, Mosche, Aron and Rachel.

The above data was obtained for me from the archives of Portugal, Spain, Holland, France and Italy. The data of the happenings in Turkey came to me from the mouth of my father, Jacob Michael Amateau. It is, therefore, safe to assume that the Amados, Amatos, Ama-Agua, Amateau are all descendants of Doctor Lusitanius Habib Amatus, who in turn was a member of the large Habib family.

There are several serious problems with Mr. Amateau's narrative. In particular, the Encyclopedia Judaica states that Doctor Lusitanius was born in 1511 and died in 1568. The article further states that he died of the plague, not from a stroke. The doctor was a very learned man, and authored several books on medicine and pharmacology, but there is no mention of his ever having been a business agent for any royalty (of course the absence of this data in a single article in the Encyclopedia is inconclusive).
While there is evidence that Doctor Lusitanius lived in several different communities in Europe, the article does not mention any connection with the King of Spain. He did, however, study medicine in Spain at the University of Salamanca, where he received his degree in 1530. The article also indicates that he treated Pope Julius III, the sister of the Pope and the niece of the Pope. It further states that he was born in Castelo Branco, Portugal, and during the course of his life he lived in several cities, including Antwerp, Venice and Salonica (where he died). The article makes no mention of any of his family members.
At the present time, there does not appear to be any legitimate reason to conclude that the Amateau (Amato) family of Rhodes is definitely descended from the good doctor (although this represents an extremely intriguing line of research).
The last part of the narrative is probably grounded in fact. Oral information collected from an entirely different source (but not yet verified via other means), indicates that Muse Amateau (the progenitor of the family in Rhodes) was originally a tobacco farmer in Turkey. This appears to match with the data presented in the end of the essay.
According to the essay, a Miriam Franco, daughter of Rabbi Mosche Franco, married Jacques Michael Amateau. This information was bolstered by data recently received from an independent source (material provided by A. Touzard). Albert Amateau claims that his father was Jacob Michael Amateau. Additional oral information about Albert and his brothers and sisters collected several years ago implies that this is the case (one sister, Rachel, married a man named Ganon, and she is reportedly still alive as well, and also living in Los Angeles). This being the case, it is unlikely in the extreme that Albert's father was the brother of the 2nd great grandfather of the preparer (as has been suggested by other family members), since his name was also Jacob (Jakov?).
However, Albert claims a brother named Muse (Mosche). The preparer's 3rd great grandfather along the same line is reported as having been named Muse (Mosche), and to have been a tobacco farmer, from Turkey. The question now becomes, are these the same person, or is there yet another error in the data? Given the data available at the present time, the answer to that question is not clear. Approximate years of birth don't quite work out, although the time frames are not impossible, just unlikely.
Thus, the connection between these two lines of the Amateau family name has yet to be established. Finding this link presents a significant challenge.
