ACCOMPLISHMENTS
- Introduced Privada, an Internet privacy company, into the public
policy arena, testifying in Congress and managing trade association
memberships, making this small company a force in privacy policy. Blended traditional brand marketing
and public affairs by creating a campaign mailer reaching out to thousands
of state and federal elected representatives, national political party
platform committee delegates and media explaining that our technology could
help them solve the privacy dilemma.
The campaign generated media calls and speaking opportunities,
receiving approximately $75K worth of attention while spending only
$12,500.
- Protected ISPs from
liability for the actions of their users by contributing a deposition to the
Reno v. ACLU expedited review overturning the Communications Decency Act
(CDA), and by serving as technical consultant to the carrier team that
addressed the International Copyright Treaty Conference and subsequent US
ratification in the Digital Millenium Copyright
Act. Subsequent suit dismissals
saved $30M for AOL, for example.
Dissuaded the pursuit of a California required modem percentage bill
and the introduction of a CDA for California. Part of public relations team
handling the RTC v. NETCOM case and the Cantor and Siegal spam incident to NETCOM’s good.
- Product marketing manager
for Amdahl Corporation’s flagship mainframe product that generated $750
million annually. Managed
product launch including a road-show program of 10 teams doing 120 customer
shows in 20 days in 40 countries.
- Launched Advanced Network
and Services, the NSFNET spinout company and first nationwide commercial
provider, later sold to AOL for $35M and thence to WorldCom for $170M. Initiated, developed and managed the
marketing/branding programs for the NSFNET Project (for Merit, IBM, MCI, and
the National Science Foundation), managing a high profile public relations
effort to retain public interest and funding.

trained staff and managed the first technical support department for
consumer customers at NETCOM, using 19 people to staff a 24x7 shop serving
60,000 dial-up customers.
