Peter WENGER held citizenship at Forst, Amsoldingen Parish, Canton Bern,
Switzerland. He was married at Amsoldingen on 19 Feb. 1717 as a resident
of Forst to Barbara ERHARD of Blumenstein.1
At the baptism of his son Peter he was listed as a "Schulmeister" [teacher].
At the death of his wife Barbara, she was called the wife of the "Spendvogt"
[almoner].
Peter WENGER and Barbara ERHARD had children born at Forst, and baptized
at Amsoldingen:
1. Barbara WENGER bap. 6 Feb. 1718;1 m.1 Christen MEGERT 14 Nov. 1738;4
m.2 Hans Hofmann 30 Jan. 1744;5 d. 9 Oct. 1776 Oberbütschel, Rüeggisberg
Parish, Canton Bern, bur. 12 Oct.;6
2. Christen WENGER bap. 1 Nov. 1722;1 m. 6 June 1752 Barbara BRÖNNIMANN;2
d. 10 April 1786 Forst, bur. 13 April 1786;3
3. Peter WENGER bap. 8 July 1725;1 m. 6 June 1752 Elisabeth KISLIG;2
Julius Billeter in Genealogy of the Fischer Family of Höfen, & Amsoldingen;
Wenger Family of Höfen, Forst, Langenbühl & Dittlingen, Kt. Bern, Switzerland,
abt. 1540-18957 listed that the Christian WENGER who married Barbara
BRÖNNIMANN as the Christian baptized 22 Feb. 1729, son of Peter WENGER and
wife Anna RIEM, although his notes on the WENGER family of Forst listed no
father for him.8
Several records show that to be in error. First, is that Christen's son
Christen married Barbara HÄNNI on 31 Mar. 1786, which was followed by
the marriage of his son Johannes on 19 May 1786. A bracket was drawn to
include both marriages, and listed them as [sons] of the deceased
Kirchm[eyer].3 As the bracket included both names, it would have been made
after the marriage of Johannes, which was also after the death of Christian
WENGER the "alt Kirchmeÿer," [their father] who died between their marriages on
13 April 1786.3 His age at death of 64 corresponds with the 1722 birth, not the
1729 one.
The second evidence is that Christen and [his brother] Peter married on the
same day, respectively to Barbara BRÖNNIMANN and Elisabeth KISLIG.2 Additional
evidence is found in the sponsors they had for their children. Christen
WENGER and wife Barbara BRÖNNIMANN had as one of the sponsors, Barbara
HOFMANN, born WENGER, of "Riggisberg" [sic Rüeggisberg].2 For their second
child, one of the sponsors was Peter WENGER.2 For their fifth child, one of
the sponsors was the "Spendvogt" [almoner] Peter WENGER's wife [not named].
From her death record, Barbara ERHARD, [the mother of the Christen WENGER
who married Barbara BRÖNNIMANN], was the wife of the Spendvogt Peter WENGER.3
Peter WENGER and wife Elisabeth KISLIG had among the three sponsors for their
first child, Hans Hofmann of Rüeggisberg [second husband of his sister Barbara],
and Barbara BRÖNNIMANN, the wife of his [br]uder [brother] Christen WENGER.2
Barbara WENGER and her second husband Hans Hofmann had as sponsors for chidren
baptized in 1756 and 1757 at Rüeggisberg, Peter WENGER and Elsbeth KISLIG
[Peter's wife]. For the first their residence was not given, but for the second
both were listed as from Amsoldingen.11 While Peter WENGER and wife Anna RIEM
also had children named Barbara and Peter, their daughter Barbara was born in
1725. Born in 1725, she would be too young to be the Barbara who first married
Christen MEGERT at Wattenwil in 1738 and secondly Hans HOFMANN at Rüeggsiberg.
The combination of all the records, shows the parents of Christen WENGER who
married Barbara BRÖNNIMANN were the Spendvogt Peter WENGER and wife Barbara
ERHARD, not Peter WENGER and wife Anna RIEM.
Christen WENGER and Barbara BRÖNNIMANN had children 6 children
