Library faculty are expected to rotate periodically into full-time teaching assignments in interdisciplinary, team-taught programs and they are expected to participate in college-wide governance. Applicants must demonstrate imaginative, thoughtful, exciting approaches to teaching and learning across disciplines, as well as to connecting library instruction and resources with academic curricula outside the library. This position requires a Master's degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited school (or foreign equivalent). Recent graduates are urged to apply; experience with current and emerging technologies is also appreciated. Good service to people of all races and ethnicities is an important part of this position and requires that candidates have ability and interest in creating a library environment and ethos that is welcoming to and representative of a multicultural community. Substantive knowledge of and experience working with diverse populations is highly desirable. Furthermore, the successful candidate for this position should have the interpersonal skills, substantive background and experience to teach effectively and provide reference work to people from a wide variety of economic and cultural backgrounds. The Evergreen State College Library: The Evergreen State College Library enjoys many distinctive services, structures, collections and other characteristics appropriate to the innovative nature of the college at large. The library has an abiding commitment to providing services to and collections representative of a multicultural population. Perhaps the most radical structural element, in both its difference from other academic institutions and its effects, is faculty/library rotation. According to this structure, as outlined in the faculty handbook, library faculty are required to leave their library duties and teach in the full-time curriculum for at least one quarter out of nine. When one library faculty is teaching, one member of the teaching faculty works full-time in the library. This creates a uniquely forceful connection between the library's services, collections, instructional programs, and the curriculum. When library faculty teach in the curriculum, they are members of interdisciplinary faculty teams which create full-time programs, often designed around an interesting question rather than an established field of knowledge. What develops is a community in which faculty are learning along with the students; faculty model learning from disciplines beyond their own fields as well as teaching from within their expertise. The cross-disciplinary nature of library instruction and services is often excellent preparation for library faculty to contribute to these learning communities; however, library faculty always teach from subject expertise in addition to their library science background. Library faculty engage in the full range of activities in the learning communities, which commonly include extensive book seminars, workshops, field studies, writing instruction and research projects, as well as traditional lecture formats. Evergreen's distinctive curricular structure provides ample opportunities for students to engage in significant group and individual research. As a result, when library faculty are working in the library, they are frequently challenged to design library instruction, which is not only highly specific to the needs of individual programs, but also substantively integrated with academic program activities. These welcome challenges require that librarians familiarize themselves with program content in order to design effective workshops. One result is that library faculty have become the campus leaders in integrating information technology and academic content. Additionally, constant interconnection between the library and the curriculum successfully supports and encourages student research, according to indicators such as circulation rates, interlibrary loan transactions and library workshop attendance.
