General
Benefits and Responsibilities
- Flight and ground instruction leading to an FAA
Private Pilot Certificate is a benefit of cadet membership.
- This benefit does not come without cost
- Units commanders may only give their approval for
cadets requesting this training to those cadets who have demonstrated
commitment to the squadron, the group, and the wing.
- Cadets are billed for their flight time, typically
about $75 per hour in a Cessna 172 Skyhawk.
- In contrast, an FBO may charge $90 per hour plus tax for the
airplane and another $35 per hour for the instructor.
- At the time of the FAA Private Pilot Flight
Test, charges for the flight test may be as follows
- FAA Inspectors from the FAA Flight
Standards District Offices (FSDOs, pronounced Fizz-Does) do not
charge for their services, but are sometimes not as available as
a candidate might like.
- FAA DPEs (Designated Pilot Examiners) are
generally more available but they charge for their services. DPE
fees range anywhere from $100 to $300. The cadet is responsible
for these fees.
- CAP Instructors may not bill for their
instruction time. Conversely, CAP Instructors are not required to
provide instruction to everyone who asks for it. The CAP Instructors
who do provide instruction to CAP members, both cadets and seniors
do so out of a sense of commitment to the CAP.
