MATHEMATICS: ROOM 39 - DREAMHOUSES

CLASSROOM BASED MATHEMATICS PROJECTS:

BUILD YOUR OWN DREAM HOUSE

Did you ever wish you could design a house in which you would love to live?

This project gives the students in rooms 36 and 39 a chance to do this that.

Each child is given the opportunity to imagine the house they would dream of living in, and then design it and build a 3-D model of the structure.

Instructional activities include:

Mathematical concepts: Two and three dimensional measurement, use of a 1/16" scale ruler, relational 1/8" and ¼"'scales, multiplication of fractions, understanding and application of graphing, and computation of construction costs.

Design concepts: Spatial relationships, practical use of space and arrangement of components, following a set of building codes, neatness of work, use of rough drafts, expansion of scales, and use of equipment such as drawing boards, 'fadeout' velum, T-squares, 45o triangles, and architectural templates.
