This course is developed to meet the needs of the child who is advanced in mathematical abilities. The content, aligned with the California State Content Standards for Mathematics , is focused on higher order thinking skills with a goal of preparing the child for an advanced pre-algebra program or Algebra 1A in seventh grade. Students are placed in one of two study programs based on a pretest model and their demonstrated ability to work independently. Within the contexts of algegraic expressions and equations, students investigate operations and problem solving in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, decimals, fractions, and integers. Students improve higher order skills using geometry of polygons, polyhedrons, and circles. Students also explore probability and statistics, measures of central tendency, and percents. Students are given an end of year algebra readiness test to help determine eligibility for Algebra 1A in seventh grade. Most students will take an advanced pre-algebra course in seventh grade. Our mathematics text is California Middle School Mathematics Concepts and Skills, Course 2 (Grade 7) by McDougal Littel/Houghton Mifflin :
