EARTH SCIENCES: |

|
Our horticulture unit is a perfect integration of our Earth
sciences studies into geology and soil types and our life studies of energy
exchange among organisms. The energy used by animals, including humans,
initially comes from the sun. The only organisms on earth able to change
this solar energy into chemical energy (food)are plants (see Food-Web-Menus
for more details). Through a study of horticulture and actually growing
a garden, students learn first hand the elements needed for plant propagation
and growth. Each student pair works to plan, prepare, cultivate, plant,
tend, and harvest a large variety of vegetables of their choosing. Each
team tends an area of 32 square feet (plots are 8' by 4' each).
