Patient Packaging Photo by John Chenger Friday (8 pm - 10 pm )

Friday evening will feature an optional cave trip for those individuals that have little to no underground experience. The trip is designed to introduce individuals to caving in Hawai`i and to provide them with some of the skills needed for moving within a cave system.

Saturday (8 am - 6 pm)

The morning will feature classroom instruction. Topics covered are:

  • Rescue Operations and Management
  • Logistics
  • Media Interaction
  • Equipment Planning and Packaging
  • Caving Equipment
  • Cave First Aid Equipment
  • Cave Search
  • Initial Response
  • Communications
  • Documentation
  • Medical Considerations
  • Difficult Evacuation Problems
  • Water Problems
  • Psychological Considerations
  • Patient/Personnel Safety
  • Hypothermia
  • Hyperthermia

The afternoon will include outdoor exercises and hands on practice in patient transport. Plan to get very dirty. Gloves and helmets will be required for the afternoon portion of the class. Kneepads are highly recommended. The topics covered are:

  • Litters
  • Patient Packaging
  • Field and Underground Application
  • Field Practice
  • Briefing for Cave Rescue Simulation

The students will have free time in the evening to practice what they learned during the day. There will also be some demonstrations on various cave rescue related topics.

Sunday (8 am - 4 pm)

The entire day will be spent in a cave mock rescue. Students will be responsible for all aspects of the rescue, from management to underground operations. Plan on getting very dirty. Full caving gear is required. There will be a debriefing and critique after the mock rescue.

This course is physically strenuous. Each participant should be in good physical condition, and will be required to sign a waiver. If the student is under 18 their parents must also sign the waiver. This is an intense training course, and we will cover a great deal of material in a short amount of time. Expect to work hard.

Thanks to John Chenger, John Hickman, and Cindy Reid for providing photographs of recent OCRs.
