Friday (8 pm - 10
pm )
Friday evening will
feature an optional cave trip for those
individuals that have little to no underground
experience. The trip is designed to introduce
individuals to caving in Hawai`i and to provide
them with some of the skills needed for moving
within a cave system.
Saturday (8 am - 6 pm)
The morning will feature
classroom instruction. Topics covered are:
- Rescue Operations and Management
- Logistics
- Media Interaction
- Equipment Planning and Packaging
- Caving Equipment
- Cave First Aid Equipment
- Cave Search
- Initial Response
- Communications
- Documentation
- Medical Considerations
- Difficult Evacuation Problems
- Water Problems
- Psychological Considerations
- Patient/Personnel Safety
- Hypothermia
- Hyperthermia
The afternoon will
include outdoor exercises and hands on practice
in patient transport. Plan to get very dirty.
Gloves and helmets will be required
for the afternoon portion of the class. Kneepads
are highly recommended. The topics covered are:
- Litters
- Patient Packaging
- Field and Underground Application
- Field Practice
- Briefing for Cave Rescue Simulation
The students will have free time
in the evening to practice what
they learned during the day. There will also be some
demonstrations on various cave rescue
related topics.
Sunday (8 am - 4 pm)
The entire day will be
spent in a cave mock rescue. Students will be
responsible for all
aspects of the rescue, from management to
underground operations. Plan on getting very
dirty. Full caving
gear is required. There will be a
debriefing and critique after the mock rescue.
This course is physically
strenuous. Each participant should
be in good physical condition, and will be
required to sign a waiver. If the student is
under 18 their parents must also sign the waiver.
This is an intense training course, and we will
cover a great deal of material in a short amount
of time. Expect to work hard.
