Summary
Linux is a freely distributed version of UNIX. Its vast popularity has skyrocketed recently due to
support from industry leaders such as IBM, Oracle, Informix, Computer Associates, and
Sybase. With the growing popularity of Linux as an enterprise solution, corporations and
government agencies need a criteria for ensuring the level of expertise of their employees. The
Linux Certification organization's advisory board is made up of the leading professionals in the
Linux and open source community, and they are developing a series of examinations to provide
Linux professionals with a clear course of action for improving their skills and knowledge base,
and to provide employers with a method for assessing the level of expertise of Linux
professionals. Linux certification for becoming a Linux Certified Administrator (LCA) involves
three levels of expertise, with a fourth level under discussion. Each level includes four courses and
examinations, and each course/examination has an accompanying study guide. The four usage
areas that apply to each series of courses are Installation, Networking, System Administration,
and Security, with Levels 1-3 becoming progressively more advanced. The Level 1 series of
Linux certification study guides consists of four manuals that outline the knowledge array the
concepts, principles, and facts - necessary to assess and certify a Linux professional's level of
expertise. The four courses/examinations included in the Level 1 series are:
- Installation
- Networking
- System Administration
- Security
