Las Vegas SUN - Game Predictions

Rancho High School
LAS VEGAS SUN - Football Matchups by Steve Cunningham
RANCHO (2-6 in 1996) at DURANGO (5-5 in 1996)
THE MATCHUP: Rancho went out and hired some high-profile coaches in an attempt to return to its athletic glory days but its been more like glory daze for football boss Cary Mitchell, who must have been stunned when only 16 players reported for the first day of practice. There should be enough bodies to go around Friday night but probably not enough talented ones to give Durango problems. The Trailblazers have 13 starters back and one of them, Alex Dixon, rushed for 342 yards in one game (against Basic) last season. He probably won't be needed that much against the wafer- thin Rams.
THE PICK: Durango 35, Rancho 0
THE RESULTS: DURANGO 20, Rancho 12

Valley High School - 1997 Sunrise Division Champions
LAS VEGAS SUN - Football Matchups by Steve Cunningham
DURANGO (1-0) at VALLEY (1-0)
THE MATCHUP: Valley Coach Greg Murphy wondered if this year's Vikings would have the same hunger as the 1996 edition. Valley's 20-19 overtime victory over Bishop Gorman last week may have showed that is the case. The Vikings let a 12-0 lead disappear, then won on Dion Jackson's touchdown and two-point conversion. Durango showed some spunk, as well, falling behind Rancho 12-0 before scoring the game's final 20 points. Scott Freel passed for 75 yards and Alex Dixon added 70 more on the ground for the Trailblazers. Valley beat Durango 27-20 in the first round of last year's playoffs.
THE PICK: Valley 28, Durango 27
THE RESULTS: DURANGO 33, Valley 28

Cheyenne High School
LAS VEGAS SUN - Football Matchups by Steve Cunningham
DURANGO (2-0) at CHEYENNE (2-0)
THE MATCHUP: The Trailblazers made the playoffs last season for the first time in school history; the Desert Shields were hampered by injuries after being state finalists in 1995. Both looked good in their non-conference battles and the victor will get an early leg up in the Sunset Division.
THE PICK: Durango 24, Cheyenne 23
THE RESULTS: Cheyenne 21, DURANGO 0

Santa Margarita High School, CA - USA Today's #8 Western H.S. Team
LAS VEGAS SUN - Football Matchups by Steve Cunningham
SANTA MARGARITA (1-0) at DURANGO (2-1)
THE MATCHUP: The Trailblazers were shut out by Cheyenne last week and have had little time to dwell on the defeat. Santa Margarita won California's Class V state title last year and has a big-time quarterback in Carson Palmer. Palmer, however, missed the opener with a stress fracture in his foot.
THE PICK: Santa Margarita 37, Durango 13
THE RESULTS: Santa Margarita 52, DURANGO 0

----------

Bonanza High School
LAS VEGAS SUN - Football Matchups by Steve Cunningham
BONANZA (0-4, 0-2) at DURANGO (2-2, 0-1)
THE MATCHUP: The Trailblazers have been shut out twice in a row and the Bengals almost upset defending state champion Western last week. Can Durango rebound? Can Bonanza break into the win column? Go with Durango.
THE PICK: Durango 28, Bonanza 14
THE RESULTS: DURANGO 21, Bonanza 20

----------

Clark High School
LAS VEGAS SUN - Football Matchups by Steve Cunningham
DURANGO (3-2, 1-1) at Clark (2-3, 1-2)
THE MATCHUP: The Trailblazers avoided a killer loss last week and the Chargers took Western to the limit. Clark can knot up the race for the Sunset's final playoff spot with a victory.
THE PICK: Clark 18, Durango 14
THE RESULTS: DURANGO 35, Clark 19

Cimarron-Memorial High School - 1997 Sunset Division Champions and AAAA Nevada State Runner-up
LAS VEGAS SUN - Football Matchups by Steve Cunningham
DURANGO (4-2, 2-1) at Cimarron-Memorial (5-1, 3-1)
THE MATCHUP: The Trailblazers' win over Clark last week gave them some breathing room in the Sunset playoff race. That's good, because the Spartans are sure to be fired up after double-overtime loss to Western.
THE PICK: Cimarron 37, Durango 16
THE RESULTS: Cimarron-Memorial 42,DURANGO 7

----------

Western High School
LAS VEGAS SUN - Football Matchups by Steve Cunningham
WESTERN (6-1, 4-0) at DURANGO (4-3, 2-2)
THE MATCHUP: The Warriors better not look past the Trailblazers to next week's battle with Cheyenne. Durango was blown out by Cimarron last Thursday and can clinch a playoff berth with a victory. Expect this to be another close Western win.
THE PICK: Western 14, Durango 6
THE RESULTS: DURANGO 26, Western 24

----------

Bishop-Gorman High School
LAS VEGAS SUN - Football Matchups by Steve Cunningham
BISHOP-GORMAN (2-6, 1-4)) at DURANGO (5-3, 3-2)
THE MATCHUP: The Gaels have won two of their last three and a win ensures the Trailblazers are the Sunset's No. 4 playoff seed. Gorman could be very dangerous against Durango.
THE PICK: Durango 21, Bishop Gorman 20
THE RESULTS: DURANGO 32, Bishop Gorman 0
