O'HARA FAMILY |

|
Hugh, Sr and Hugh, Jr of Marion County, Ohio
A-1 Hugh O'Harra, born between 1770 and 1780, died Wabash County, Indiana between date of will and filing of same; June 25, 1849 and January 16, 1850. Widow's name was Jennett. All but two children received one dollar. Hugh and his wife Janetta had moved from Marion Co, Ohio to Wabash Co, Indiana shortly before his death, according to available records. His purchased land in Marion County, Ohio 20 Mar 1823, Book 2 page 174. H 15, containing 86 acres, on 5-25-1832. He had several land patents in Marion County, which was Crawford County from 1820 to 1824. Before that it was Delaware until 1820, Franklin until 1808 and Ross County until 1803. Because of the county border changes, it is hard to establish when Hugh first settled in Ohio. There was an Arthur O'Harra in the area as early as 1803, but not much is known about him. B-1 John O'Harra, married Mary Jane Crafton Nov 1844, deceased at the writing of his father's will. B-2 Arthur O'Harra (Is this the Arthur, born 1801, of Marion Co, OH, who married Maxamillia Fisher, and who died in Hamilton Twp, Franklin Co, OH?) He was reported to have been six-foot tall, and we know Hugh (B-4 below) was 6 foot four by writtings of his granddaughter. Pictures of the two, Hugh and Arthur, reveal such a strong similarity that they must be brothers. The only problem is that this Arthur said his mother was Mary. Did Hugh, Sr have a first wife? B-3 James O'Harra, born 1810, married Ellen , 7 chi B-4 Hugh O'Harra, Jr., born 1812, see below B-5 Daniel O'Harra, born 1817 OH, married Clarissa Tait, born 1824 Ohio. They moved briefly to Udell Twp, Appanoose Co, IA, before moving on to Weston, Umatilla Co, Oregon. B-6 Wesley O'Harra, m Mary Slinsy 11 Jul 1847 B-7 Ezekiel O'Harra B-8 Charlotte O'Harra B-9 Elizabeth O'Harra, married Thomas Tipton, was given $200 from father's estate B-10 Margaret O'Harra, married 30 Jan 1838 Allen Co, IN John C , 2nd 2-28-1850 Nathaniel Roush, was given $200 from father's estate
B-7 Hugh O'Hara, born1812 Ohio, probably Marion Co, which was Delaware County at that time ( 1808 to 1820) married 1-1-1839 Sarah Hopple, born1820 Ohio, daughter of George and Margaret Hopple. His granddaughter wrote that he was six foot four, and that he was a gentle and kind man. Allen County, Indiana history says Hugh came 1833, but believe this should have been 1838. He was still in Marion Co, OH when his land patent was issued in 1838. He secured a land patent in Adams County, Indiana in 1838. He is noted to be of Marion County, Ohio on the document, # 19470. He sold this land 05 Jan 1839 to Joseph Berry and bought land from his father-in-law the same day. Hugh secured two land patents in Allen County, Indiana, dated 20 September 1839. They are indexed as Harra, not O'Harra. The first is to Hugh O. Harra, Jr of Allen County for NE 1/4 NW 1/4 Sec 36, Twp 29, Range12. The second is to Hugh O Harra of Allen County for the SE 1/4 of same. Hugh and Sarah show in the census of 1840 in Adams Co. He voted in Pleasant Twp. in Allen Co. 1842. He showed census 1850 and 1860 in Pleasant Twp. He purchased land in Marion Twp 1867 and showed census of 1870 there. If they stayed there I do not know why the cemetery records do not show them. The Hopples are buried in Bethel Cem. as well as the Fuller children. The O'Haras had a daughter buried there also. I took a picture of the gravestones for the Hopples. I wish now I had cleaned them up for a better picture. The property he bought in 1867 from George W. & Sarah J. Bell was "the north end of the south west fraction of Sec.34 in Twp nine north of Range 13 East, containing forty-seven acres of land more or less." He paid 1200 dollars. Both land deeds showed his name as O'Harra, but his daughters' marriage records show O'Hara. His son, John, went with the name O'Hara and his son, George, used O'Harra. |
