A-1 George Smith, born ca
1610 Hertfordshire, England, died 5-17-1662 New Haven, CT. He was on the list of
Freemen for 22 years there. He shows on the ship "Hector" in 1637 with a group
from St. Stephens Parish of London. He joined this parish when the ship he had paid
passage was conscripted by the Queen for a little war going on at that time. It was
a couple years before the ship resumed its roll of bringing passengers to the New
World.
His wife was Sarah, who married 2nd 7-2-1668 John
Jackson. George shows in early records; p 18, 92, 297/8, 316/7, New Haven colony Records.
The original church was destroyed in the Great London Fire of 1666,
and was replaced by Christopher Wren. It too was lost in 1940 during World War II. Coleman St,
where the church stood, is between Guildhall and the Stock Exchange, in Cheapside.
In November of 1633,
Davenport
fled to
Amsterdam
to escape increasing disapproval of the Crown where the group organized their move to the
New World
. The group included: John and Elizabeth Davenport ; Theophilus Eaton, Anne Eaton, old Mrs. Eaton, his mother; Samuel and Nathaniel Eaton, Mary Eaton, Theophilus and Hannah, David and Thomas Yale, Edward Hopkins, also many inhabitants of the parish of St. Stephen, Coleman St.; Nathaniel Rowe, William Andrews, Henry Browning, James Clark, Jasper Crane, Jeremy Dixon, Nicholas Elsey, Francis Hall, Robert Hill, William Ives, George Smith, George Ward and Lawrence Ward.
Others (Probably from the neighborhood, but not members of St. Stephen.): Ezekiel Cheever, Edward Bannister, Richard Beach, Richard Beckley, John Brockett, John Budd, John Cooper, Arthur Halbidge, Mathew Hitchcock, Andrew Hull, Andrew Low, Andrew Messenger, Mathew Moulthrop, Francis Newman, Robert Newman, Richard Osborn, Edward Patteson, John Reader, William Thorp and Samuel Whitehead. The group chartered the "Hector" of
London
. On June 26, 1637, John Winthrop recorded the arrival of the group from
London
at
Boston
.
In Aug. of 1637, Eaton and several others traveled south to view the area around the Long Island Sound. They left members of their party there over the winter to retain possession. Many from the Bay Colony chose to leave for
New Haven
with Eaton and
Davenport
