The History Of Cuyahoga County:
Under Parma:  "The settlement of the township was very slow until late 1821,when there was an important accession in the families of Asa Emerson, Amos Hodgman, Jesse Nicholas, Joseph Small, and William Steele. These families had been neighbors in Maine and in 1817 had removed together to the West; having all settled, though separately, in southern Ohio. They kept up communication with each other and, becoming dissatisfied with their location in that region, they agreed to move up north to "greenbrier". In 1821 they accordingly entered the township in company. The first marriage ceremony was celebrated at the house of Joseph Small, when his daughter Lois was wedded to Ephraim Fowls of Middleburg. An attendant upon the occasion states that he event, although a novel one in the township, was an exceedingly quiet one. "
Under Rockport, Cuyahoga Co, Ohio:  "The first school district in the township was set off May 1826. In this district was Benajah Fay, Samuel Freeman, Thomas Adams, John Hodgman, Amos Hodgman, Joseph Small, Peter Countryman, Asa Emerson, Jesse Nichols, and Peletial Bliss."

From the "Valley of the Upper Maumee," page 438: "No family living at present in Allen County can trace its American ancestry further than the Smalls of Marion Twp. They are among the descendants of five brothers, Joseph, Joshua, Purington, John, Sr, and Taylor, who were passengers on the Mayflower, which landed at Plymouth Rock, November 9, 1620. Joseph Small, Jr, the ancestor of the Smalls of Allen County, was the first child born in Old Borden, in 1778. He became a sailor, and followed the seas for thirteen years. He and wife were natives of Maine, and remained there until 1817, when they determined to emigrate to a point four miles above Cincinnati. With seven children—Louis, Maria, Mary, Delilah, Catharine, Emeline and Joseph, they traveled by team until they arrived at the river and there embarked in a boat of their own construction. After about four years they moved to Cleveland, and Joseph Small purchased a farm on the Western Reserve. He was a for a number of years engaged in surveying the government lands in that part of the state, and was occupied in making brick and such articles as could not be purchased at the supply stores. In 1838, with his family, he cut his way through to Allen County, and settled on Section 23. Mr Small, with the help of his sons, helped to cut the first roads in the township. The wife of this pioneer was Margaret Duncan, whose father was a Scotchman. He was pressed into the British service soon after emigrating to this county, but deserted and went to the mountains of Maine, where he was married and lived and died. Mr and Mrs Small raised a family of thirteen children, all but two of whom lived to maturity. "
