Francis Pollard, b ca 1720, d 1771 Bedford Co, VA, m Betty Phelps, b ca 1730, d ca 1779 Bedford Co. Betty was still alive when she was in court in conjunction with husband, Francis Pollard's estate in August 1779. His will was written 4-3-1771 Establishing that she was a daughter of John and Mary Phelps is a deed for land willed to her and delivered after her father's death by her brother, John Phelps, Jr. Six of the chi are put under the care of guardians with the courts in Feb 1780. Judith, Sarah, Jane, Betty, and Francis chose John Otey as guardian. Each child received 2481, 3 shillings, 7 pence on July 1, 1780. Witnesses and/or exec. were: Robert Allen (school teacher), Matthew Talbot, Thomas Arthur, John Phelps, Jr, and James Callaway. On the distribution were: William Trigg, John Trigg, and William Leftwich. Betty was made to give "counter sec" as adm, book 6, p 187, 207, 248. Francis bought land on Otter Creek, Lunenburg Co. (now Bedford Co.), VA 6-28-1753 from John and Mary Phelps. Also on Hunt Creek from John Phelps, which had been patented to John Phelps 1-10-1748, recorded 4-27-1762. This land was transferred 1773 to Mary as part of her father's estate. Francis paid tithes in Cumberland Parish, Lunenburg Co. 1749 and was a blacksmith. Francis Pollard, John Phelps, & Jesse Absolom wit deed of John Abston to Stephen Clements 3-23-1761 on west side Otter Cr, recorded same day. There was a Benjamin Pollard, who sold land in Lunenburg Co. and paid tax in Cumberland Parish 1764. There was also a Richard Pollard, who sold land on Crooked River in that part of Lunenburg Co. that became Bedford Co. He was shown to be from King & Queen Co, VA. Lunenburg Wills show William Pollard, who died 1761, leaving wife Agnes and son Benjamin, and dau Agnes - with land in Louisa Co. It is quite possible that Francis is related to the Robert Pollard, who was a respected landowner of K & Q Co. The link has not been uncovered. |
