Hopple (Hubbell) Family
Brothers, John and George Hopple
A-1 John Hopple , b 1795 (??Rochester), Montgomery Co, PA, d abt 1867, m 1st 11-21-1827 Ripley Co, IN Martha Arnold, b 12-9-1800 VA, dau of James Arnold and Frances Green. He m 2nd 29 May 1836 Vernon, Jennings Co, IN Nancy A Staley, b 1813 VA. Proof that John and George (B-2) are brothers is the booklet of Lida Fuller , in which she says Louis and his sister Rosa Hopple/Hoppel ( C-6, the minister) is her third cousin. When evaluating this relationship, it can be determined that she meant 1st cousin three times removed. Rosa lived for awhile on property of George Hopple, her uncle. Lida was a student of Louis. 1840 census Jennings Co, IN John Hopple 2,2,1,0,0,0,1(40-50)//1,0,0,0,1(she is 20-30) 1850 census Redding Twp, Jackson Co, IN, p 135 John Hopple 45 TN, Nancy 37 VA, Daniel 12, Catherine. 11, Jacob 9, Nerlinda 8, Thos 4, Lewis 3, Rosanna 1 1860 census Spencer Twp, Jennings Co, IN, p 292 John Hopple 67 PA, Nancy 45 VA, Jacob 20, Nerlinda 17, Thos 14, Lewis 13, Rosanna 12, Martha 10, Julia Staley 75 B-1 John Hopple, b abt 1828 B-2 George A Hopple, b 03 Apr 1830 Napoleon, Ripley Co, IN, d 20 Sep 1863 Chicamagua, TN, bur Queensville, Jennings Co, IN. 1874 Monroeville, IN. She is found as Hubble and living in
the Andrew Somers household in the 1870 census Marion Twp, Allen
Co,
IN, p 551. Lida Fuller said Rosa worked for the Rev. Record's wife, who was an
invalid. This must have been before working in the Somers'
household, as Lida Fuller Small left the area 1872 for Illinois. B-11 Martha Hopple , b 1852 Jackson Co, IN, d 18 Jul 1929 Monroeville, Allen Co, IN GEORGE
George is found using many spellings of his surname. In 1813 he
is recorded as receiving an allotment to travel to Butler County, OH. Recorded
in John Ross Company of Infantry as George Hubble.
He was a Corporal in Zumalt's 2nd Ohio Regiment in 1813.. Recorded Roll Box 104,
Roll Exct. 602 He paid Chattel tax in Preble Co, OH 1827 through
1833, first year as Hubble, then as Hopple,
usually two horses and a couple cows. He paid Chattel tax 1830 on land described as 64 acres in sec 33,
township 8, range 2. George purchased something from an estate sale in 1828. I have not located the
purchase, or sale, of this 64 acres. The family of Hubbells in Preble County is well documented in the county history of 1881. George cannot be linked to this family at this time. Granddaughter Lida Fuller Small said George came from Columbus, Ohio. It may be that George was not connected to this family, accounting for why he changed his name to Hopple. Records of Butler Co show a Simon Hopple married 11-6-1825 Julia A. Ayres. Genealogy records state they went to Clinton Co, IN after selling their land May 3, 1826, recorded in deed book L, p 535. The 1850 census shows her apparently a widow and living in the Samuel Ayres household. Julia was b 1810 OH. George Hopple's Genealogy George Hopple came to Allen Co 1833, as documented in "Pictorial History of Fort Wayne," by B. J. Griswold, and "Valley of the Upper Maumee," Vol 1,page 432. Land records show he bought land in Allen Co, IN that year, while yet living in Preble Co, OH 1833. Ref: Deed Book 14, page 236-238. The Hopples moved to neighboring Adams Co, before 1839, when they sold some land to their dau and her husband, Hugh & Sarah O'Hara. They also sold land to dau, Anna and husband Michael Roe. George purchased land from the Fort Wayne Land Office: 78.92 acres with receipt # 2577, 40 acres with #2648, 84.92 with #2234, 69.66 with #2235, 67.19 acres #7334, 40 acres #6818, 173.2 acres #17927 for a total of 553.89 acres, all in the southern part of the county , near the border of Adams Co. None of this land was purchased with a military land warrant. When George and Margaret sold land 10 Nov 1835, the deed was witnessed by Anna Hopple. Anna could be George’s mother, as their daughter Anna would not have been of a legal age. A gazetteer of 1862 shows a George Hopple in Washington Twp, Allen Co, probably the one born 1810 PA, as shown in the 1860 census. This George bought land in Washington Twp, in the NW part of Allen County, IN in 1836. George and Margaret are in Preble Twp, Adams Co, IN in the 1860 census. Some Roe chi are with them, and daughter Anna, now married to Morton, is living next door. Both George and Margaret are buried in Bethel Cem in Allen Co, IN. Have a picture of their headstones. Granddaughter Lida said Margaret lost the use of her legs and had not walked for years. C-1 Anna Hopple, b 10-22-1818 OH, d 2-26-1890, m 12-26-1836 Adams Co
to Michael Roe, b 1811, d 4-18-1854. Both are buried in Bethel Cem, Allen Co.
They show 1850 census living in Preble. There is a history of Adams Co published mid 1980's of part
of the Roe family. Informant was Mrs. Eileen Dawson, 221 S 1st St, Decatur, IN 46733. C-3 Elizabeth Hopple, 2-2-1812, died 4-27-1842 Marion Twp, Allen Co, IN, married 8-13-1827 in Eaton, Preble Co, OH Benjamin Nickerson, born 7-21-1808 Eaton, NH. There are several genealogist working on this line, which happens to be the branch that support Everman as the maiden name for Margaret. Note: The town of Eaton appears in both locations, OH and NH. C4- Margaret Hopple, m 5-27-1849 Adams Co, IN to Henry Summers. She is shown as Hubble. They are found living next to her sister, Anna Roe, in the 1850 census. Her son was Eli Summers, b 1850 Adams Co, IN C-5 ?son, b 1830-1835, m Thirza Walker. Lewis Hopple sold land to her ca 1901 in Adams Co, IN C-6 ?Louis (Lewis) C Hopple, b 12-16-1854, c 4=16=1904 at her home in Dupont, IN, lived Jefferson Co, IN. This is from "The Whitcomb Family" page 380. He shows pages 231 and 158 in "History of Adams Co" published 1979, as a minister. C-7 John A Hopple, b ca 1811-1820, d 9-14-1848 Allen Co, IN, no age given, buried Bethel Cem, Allen Co, IN. His monument says he was the son of George and Margaret Hopple. There was a John Hopple who paid tac 1826 in Butler Co, OH, but that man has to have been born much earlier
Unattached: Charles Hopple purchased land Allen Co 1854.
I have a death certificate 9-1-1903 for a Charles Hoppel, born January 1856 PA,
son of Charles Hoppel, of PA. Bert Hoppel of Fort Wayne is the informant.
