Hopple (Hubbell) Family

Granddaughter, Lida Fuller Small, said the name was really Hubbell. She lived with her grandparents for some time after her mother died. Lida kept a little booklet, much like a diary, in which she had made notes about her life. The original of this writing can be found in the safekeeping of the public library in Frankfort, IN

Proof that John and George (B-2) are brothers is the booklet of Lida Fuller , in which she says Louis and his sister Rosa Hopple/Hoppel ( C-6, the minister) is her third cousin. When evaluating this relationship, it can be determined that she meant 1st cousin three times removed. Rosa lived for awhile on property of George Hopple, her uncle. Lida was a student of Louis.

 GEORGE

A-2  George Hopple/Hubbell, born 1-24-1791 PA, died 12-6-1871 Allen Co. IN, married Margaret, born 7-8-1790 KY, died 7-24-1869, also Allen Co, IN. There are genealogist who think that Margaret's maiden name was Everman. Lida Fuller Small said in her memoirs that the name was Hughes.

George is found using many spellings of his surname. In 1813 he is recorded as receiving an allotment to travel to Butler County, OH. Recorded in John Ross Company of Infantry as George Hubble. He was a Corporal in Zumalt's 2nd Ohio Regiment in 1813.. Recorded Roll Box 104, Roll Exct. 602

He is found paying church tax in Preble Co, OH, Washington Twp in 1823, with the spelling Hoffle, when he pledged thirty-seven and a half cents to a church in the Shidler neighborhood. It was a Christian denomination, which started a free church open to everyone. See page 139 of the History of Preble County, Ohio, 1881.

1870 Preble Twp, Adams Co, IN: George Hobble 79

He purchased land in Butler County, OH, as George Hopple, from Jeremiah Blackford on July 30, 1823. Ohio Tax records of 1826 show a John Hopple and George Hopple in Lemon Twp Butler Co. He and Margaret sold this same land, as George Hubble, on August 31, 1826 to Henry Henning.  On the deed of sale, he is cited as in Preble Co. This land was described as sec 1, township 3, range 1.

He paid Chattel tax in Preble Co, OH 1827 through 1833, first year as Hubble, then as Hopple, usually two horses and a couple cows. He paid Chattel tax 1830 on land described as 64 acres in sec 33, township 8, range 2. George purchased something from an estate sale in 1828. I have not located the purchase, or sale, of this 64 acres.

They purchased 50 acres from Isaac and Sarah Hornbaker 02 April 1832 for $300, described as sec 5, township 8, range 2. George and Margaret sold 50 acres to John M. Sackman for $350, on 17 June 1833 as Hoppell.

The family of Hubbells in Preble County is well documented in the county history of 1881. George cannot be linked to this family at this time. Granddaughter Lida Fuller Small said George came from Columbus, Ohio. It may be that George was not connected to this family, accounting for why he changed his name to Hopple.

Records of Butler Co show a Simon Hopple married 11-6-1825 Julia A. Ayres. Genealogy records state they went to Clinton Co, IN after selling their land May 3, 1826, recorded in deed  book L, p 535. The 1850 census shows her apparently a widow and living in the Samuel Ayres household. Julia was b 1810 OH.

George Hopple's Genealogy

George Hopple came to Allen Co 1833, as documented in "Pictorial History of Fort Wayne," by B. J. Griswold, and "Valley of the Upper Maumee," Vol 1,page 432. Land records show he bought land in Allen Co, IN  that year, while yet living in Preble Co, OH 1833. Ref: Deed Book 14, page 236-238.

The Hopples moved to neighboring Adams Co, before 1839, when they sold some land to their dau and her husband, Hugh & Sarah O'Hara. They also sold land to dau, Anna and husband Michael Roe. George purchased land from the Fort Wayne Land Office: 78.92 acres with receipt # 2577, 40 acres with #2648, 84.92 with #2234, 69.66 with #2235, 67.19 acres #7334, 40 acres #6818, 173.2 acres #17927 for a total of 553.89 acres, all in the southern part of the county , near the border of Adams Co. None of this land was purchased with a military land warrant. When George and Margaret sold land 10 Nov 1835, the deed was witnessed by Anna Hopple. Anna could be George’s mother, as their daughter Anna would not have been of a legal age.

A gazetteer of 1862 shows a George Hopple in Washington Twp, Allen Co, probably the one born 1810 PA, as shown in the 1860 census. This George bought land in Washington Twp, in the NW part of Allen County, IN in 1836. George and Margaret are in Preble Twp, Adams Co, IN in the 1860 census. Some Roe chi are with them, and daughter Anna, now married to Morton, is living next door. Both George and Margaret are buried in Bethel Cem in Allen Co, IN. Have a picture of their headstones. Granddaughter Lida said Margaret lost the use of her legs and had not walked for years.
