Barnes Family of Butler Co, PA |
|
A- Samuel Barnes could be Aaron's parent. Aaron named his oldest son Samuel. The family of Samuel Barnes, as found in the Butler County, PA history says Samuel, born County Down, came to Butler County from the eastern part of Penn. "He brought his only son, William Barnes and a daughter Elizabeth Martin." Is this statement, as found in the county history, really correct? Maybe only one son came at that time? Aaron may have followed after his military duty? Samuel said to have come to Butler Co 1795. No Samuel Barnes of any spelling is found 1800. There is a Samuel Barron in Slippery Rock Twp in the tax records for 1803 with the two hundred acres, which history says he had. There are three William Barrons in the 1800 census for Butler Co. One of the households could be above William, and his parents, along with his four children who were born before 1800. The 1800 census shows one person using the spelling of Barnes. Thomas Barnes shows with ten persons in the household. He was over 45 (born before 1755) with a younger male and female, which could be Aaron and wife, with a child the age of son Samuel, who was already born.
Please note that following Aaron Barnes is not yet proven to be connected to the above mentioned Samuel Barnes. B-1 Aaron Barnes, born ca 1770, married Nancy Vogan, daughter of James and Jean Vogan of County Caven, Ireland. Vogans were in Lancaster Co, PA earlier. Aaron Barnes was in Wayne Co, OH in the 1820 census. He showed in school census of 1826 in Wayne Co, Ohio, but he was back in Butler Co, PA for the 1830 census. Was Aaron Barnes the one from Kingwood, Hunterdon Co, NJ and in the militia in 1793? In reading the Quaker records from Kingwood one can see that many of the church married out of the church and were asked to leave the church. Since they were not named in this case it would be hard to determine if Aaron had married a Quaker girl. (My grandmother said we were a little bit Penn Dutch—and we are related to the 1st wife.) Also in the church records is mention of those not doing their duty by serving time in the militia. Usually they were named but these records are not indexed and would take some time to read well. Aaron's son, John Vogan Barnes, said in the 1880 census that his father was born NJ. He said that his mother, 2nd wife, Nancy Vogan, was born PA, which seems to be correct. Agnes Barnes received land from the estate of John Potts 1844 in Butler Co, PA, in the township of Slippery Rock. At this time she and an Aaron Barnes received land from the estate of Samuel Barnes. She was shown as being from Slippery Rock and him from Muddy Creek Township. Samuel Barnes' property bordered that of John Barnes. John Potts was also here 1803 and died before 1836. There was an Aaron Barnes and wife, Lydia, in 1845 records of Slippery Rock when they sold land to Jonathan Vogan—Book O, p 676.He is from Muddy Creek Township in Mercer Co, PA. He shows in the 1840 census as being in Muddy Cr. Twp. (this county does not have a Muddy Cr. Twp presently.) He was age 20-30.Believe him to be a son of Aaron Barnes, who was born ca 1770. C-1 Samuel Barnes, born 1798 PA, married Jane , born 1805 PA. They show in the 1850 census Mercer Co, MO. Jane shows 1870 census Mercer Co, Marion Twp, with a son, William.

In 1839 John and Susanna embarked on a boat at Pittsburgh, PA and traveled down the Ohio River, with three children and one team of mares, etc., to the Mississippi River landing at Old Brunswick, Chariton County, Missouri, where some of the Cunninghams and Stanturfs had moved. They started north and came to Chillicothe, Missouri where there was only one store and a blacksmith shop. They continued to Mercer County and made a home on the banks of Honey Creek in Medicine Twp, a small settlement, which is now called Half Rock. He was appointed Judge of Medicine Cr Twp in 1848.
