Debunking old-wives tales, legends, and the folklore of Model engines

MORE TORQUE. . also known as more BS. .

Torque is twisting force. . nothing more. . nothing less.   Compare 2 engines and the one making more top end power is making more HORSEpower, not necessarily more torque.Horsepower is a relationship of torque to RPM.  At 5250 rpm torque and horsepower are the same.  Below that speed Torque has a higher number, and above it Horsepower has a higher value.

When we are at part throttle, which engine is making more "torque"?  If they are turning the same propeller at 4000 rpm, then neither is making more torque, since the power necessary is the same for both engines. One engine manufacturer, in particular, loves to say THEIR engines make "more torque"  To this I loudly say BULLSHIT!!!

Try to remember. . it's a lot of slick marketing.  Truth be known, WHERE an engine makes it's power is totally different from how much power is being made at top rpm.  Certain engines, like a DA, for example, are ported to make better low-end and mid-range power, at the cost of ultimate top-end power numbers.  Conversely, the 3W engines are more radically ported, and make better top end numbers, at the expense of low and mid-range throttle response and smoothness.  And the BME-110 is just an animal, showing markedly less power in the mid-range, but fantastic top end power, when compared to an engine like the DA-100.  Top end power is great, but most people prefer an engine that responds very well in the mid-range, and runs very smoothly.

So, it's not "More Torque" that is important.  It's "how smooth is it in the mid-range" that really counts.  All the engines make decent top-end power.  How well it runs in the mid-range is probably going to matter more in the long run, since no one flies at full throttle all the time anyway.
