CONC JMAES TUCHET 2nd Baron of Audley; Lord Audley 1 CONT 1 CONT JAMES TUCHET, 2nd baron Audley, who distinguished himself in the wars of 1 CONC France, in 1418 ; but in 1428, being sent by Queen Margaret to oppose 1 CONC Richard Neville, earl of Salisbury , then in arms in favour of the house 1 CONC of York, he was defeated and killed at Blore-heath, co. Stafford, with 1 CONC 2400 of his companions. He m. Margaret, daughter of William Lord Roos, of 1 CONC Hamlake, (ancestor of Charlotte, the present baroness de Ros,) leaving 1 CONC issue 1 CONT 1.John, 3rd Baron 1 CONT 2.Anne, m. sir Thomas Dutton, of Dutton, co. Chester, whose 5th daughter, 1 CONC Eleanor, m. Richard Cholmondeley, esq. ancestor of the earls of 1 CONC Cholmondeley. 1 CONT 1 CONT 1459: 23 September - Blore Heath 1 CONT The battle of Blore Heath in 1459 was the first major fight in the 1 CONT Wars of the Roses. At Blore an outnumbered but veteran Yorkist 1 CONT force completely defeated the Cheshire levies sent to intercept it, 1 CONT on ground near Market Drayton that we can identify today with 1 CONT considerable accuracy. 1 CONT 1 CONT After four years of uneasy peace the King presided over a wasting realm. 1 CONC No parliament had been summoned for three years, the country was sadly 1 CONC divided and distressed. The Yorkists were armed, armies were marching 1 CONC across all England. Lord Audley had recently raised a Lancastrian army 1 CONC centered round Market Drayton, and the Queen -through whom the King 1 CONC ruled- sent him orders to intercept Lord Salisbury, who was marching from 1 CONC Yorkshire to join the Duke of York at Ludlow. The two armies met head on 1 CONC two and a half miles east of Market Drayton at a place called Blore 1 CONC Heath. Salisbury, with 3,000 troops, was outnumbered by more than two to 1 CONC one, but could not avoid giving battle. 1 CONT Audley took up a position just west of a little stream that crossed the 1 CONC Market Drayton-Newcastle-under-Lyme road, and Salisbury’s men were drawn 1 CONC up about 150 yards east of the present Audley Cross, which marks the spot 1 CONC where Lord Audley fell. The Yorkist left rested upon the boggy edge of a 1 CONC wood, but their right was in the air, and Salisbury made a laager of his 1 CONC wagons to protect this flank. Whether Salisbury feigned retreat in order 1 CONC to draw Audley on is not certain, but the Lancastrian commander was 1 CONC definitely the one to attack. Two cavalry charges were repulsed, the 1 CONC first with heavy loss to the Lancastrians, and then they mounted an 1 CONC infantry attack up the hill to the Yorkist position. But this too failed; 1 CONC there was no support from the cavalry, Lord Audley had already fallen and 1 CONC 500 Lancastrians chose this moment to desert to the enemy. Salisbury’s 1 CONC victory was complete and in the pursuit, which continued for two miles, 1 CONC the slaughter was very heavy. Possibly 2,000 Lancastrians perished in 1 CONC this battle, but less than 200 Yorkists fell. 1 CONT 1 CONT By early 1459 everyone in England expected a war; it was simply a matter 1 CONC of who would move first. Queen Margaret had already taken 1 CONT dangerous steps by moving the court to a central position at Coventry, 1 CONC where she could respond to threats from all directions, and introducing 1 CONC the heretofore uniquely French practice of conscription to muster 1 CONC soldiers for her army. The three leaders of the opposition--York, 1 CONC Salisbury, and Warwick--realized that they would have to collect their 1 CONC forces and march on London once again. But Margaret's presence at 1 CONC Coventry was awkward, dividing the armies of the three lords. Warwick was 1 CONC in France, Salisbury was far to the north at the family castle of 1 CONC Middleham in Yorkshire, and York was at his great fortress of Ludlow on 1 CONC the Welsh border. Should any of them attempt to move his army alone, he 1 CONC risked being isolated and annihilated by the Queen. 1 CONT 1 CONT There was nothing to be done for it. The three agreed to rendezvous in 1 CONC Wales. Salisbury struck south, while Warwick sailed from Calais to first 1 CONC undertake the necessary task of occupying London. The Earl did not wish 1 CONC to leave such a formidable base untaken in his rear. With this 1 CONT accomplished, he marched west to Ludlow. Salisbury was the most exposed 1 CONC of the three. He was taking a considerable risk marching to 1 CONT Wales, for his army was much smaller than the Queen's and the most 1 CONC vulnerable to attack. Margaret was seldom one to miss an opportunity. On 1 CONC September 23, 1459, a large portion of her forces met up with Salisbury 1 CONC at Blore Heath. The Earl was an experienced veteran, however. He staked 1 CONC out a good defensive position behind a hill, with a muddy river between 1 CONC him and his enemies. The terrain and his archers forced back the untried 1 CONC lords of the royal army, inflicting many casualties. Salisbury had won an 1 CONC unlikely victory and was able to continue his march. Cleverly, he 1 CONC abandoned his cannon to an old friar, who set them off intermittently, 1 CONC misleading the enemy as to his position. 1 CONT At last the Yorkists met at Ludlow. The approaching threat made their 1 CONC achievement a bitter one. By now the royal army had recruited a 1 CONC substantial force, easily enough to decimate the Yorkists, and they were 1 CONC rapidly advancing. On October 12, the two armies met at Ludford Bridge on 1 CONC the river Tern, outside Ludlow. There was a brief pause as the enemies 1 CONC felt each other out. Meanwhile, morale was plummeting among the Yorkists. 1 CONC They began to desert in large numbers, the greatest loss being a large 1 CONC contingent of soldiers from Calais under Andrew Trollope, who fled to the 1 CONC other side and revealed York's defensive preparations to the King. By now 1 CONC York and the Nevilles must have realized that victory was impossible. 1 CONC They snuck out of camp and fled into the countryside, leaving their army 1 CONC behind. 1 CONT 1 CONT Many saw this as a cowardly and treacherous act, and York's abandonment 1 CONC of Duchess Cicely and three of his young children in Ludlow won him no 1 CONC respect. But it may be that the Yorkists had judged the situation 1 CONC correctly. Henry VI was certainly not a vindictive man, and he soon 1 CONC dismissed the rebel army, knowing that his true enemies had already 1 CONC slipped through his grasp. The Duchess and her children Margaret, George, 1 CONC and Richard were taken into custody and treated well, though Ludlow was 1 CONC subjected to a particularly brutal sack. 1 CONT 1 CONT Upon returning to Coventry the Queen had the Earl of Salisbury, the Earl 1 CONC of Warwick, the Duke of York, and his sons, the Earls of March and 1 CONT Rutland, all proclaimed traitors to the crown, seizing their lands and 1 CONC authorizing their arrest and execution. For the Yorkists, there was now 1 CONC no turning back. 1 CONT 1 CONT York had sailed to Ireland with his seventeen year old son Edmund, Earl 1 CONC of Rutland. He was welcomed there, having earned goodwill during his 1 CONC tenure as Lieutenant. His other son, eighteen year old Edward, Earl of 1 CONC March, had joined Salisbury and Warwick in Calais. Margaret sent the new 1 CONC Duke of Somerset to dislodge Warwick and take Calais, but despite 1 CONC repeated efforts he was unable to do so. 1 CONT 1 CONT The Yorkists' new plan was to take and hold London, and with its 1 CONC administrative resources and a healthy propaganda campaign, reshape the 1 CONC government themselves. Accordingly, the Nevilles and March landed in Kent 1 CONC on June 26, 1460. They were popular in this region and the people 1 CONC welcomed them. They made their way to London. There was at first some 1 CONC doubt as to whether the city would open its gates to them, but 1 CONC influential and sympathetic men in the city (many of them merchants who 1 CONC had suffered severe losses during the reign of King Henry) ensured that 1 CONC their entry was unhindered. All of London was quickly taken except for 1 CONC the fortified Tower, where frightened Lancastrians held out for the King 1 CONC under Lord Scales, a seasoned soldier. For days Lord Scales defiantly 1 CONC fired the cannons of the tower at the city streets. Eventually he 1 CONC attempted to escape, but was caught and killed. 1 CONT 1 CONT The King and Queen were at Coventry when they heard the news. The King 1 CONC promptly marched in dismal weather towards Northampton, leaving the Queen 1 CONC and his son the Prince behind. When he met the Nevilles on July 10 he was 1 CONC pinned against the river Nene, which was flooded and prevented retreat. 1 CONC His army was only half the size of the Yorkists', and the rain made his 1 CONC cannon useless. As the Yorkists advanced, soldiers under Lord Grey de 1 CONC Ruthin defected--under a prior arrangement--and the battle turned into a 1 CONC rout. The loyal Duke of Buckingham was slain and Henry VI himself was 1 CONC captured. As at St. Albans the Yorkists approached their prisoner and 1 CONC begged forgiveness, a testament to the respect that the crown continued 1 CONC to command. Nevertheless, he was their prisoner and would not be 1 CONC released. 1 CONT 1 CONT It was a great victory. When Queen Margaret heard the dreadful tidings 1 CONC she took her son and fled to supporters in Scotland, being robbed and 1 CONC threatened by disloyal servants on the way. York, in Ireland, promptly 1 CONC proceeded to London. 0 @I135@ INDI 1 NAME Eleanor /De Holand/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE ABT 1405 2 PLAC Kenilworth, Warwickshire, England 1 FAMS @F57@ 0 @I136@ INDI 1
