Terror Alert Level

Carole Coleman

On June 25, I sent an email to RTE's Primetime mailbox:

"Congratulations to Carole Coleman
As an Irish citizen living in the US, I wanted to congratulate Carole Coleman for her interview with President Bush on Thursday's Primetime which I saw last night via the Internet. She treated him as the elected official that he is, pressing him on issues and not backing down despite his verbal and body-language attempts to intimidate. This is in striking contrast with the already cowed US domestic media which treats him as a demi-god. Once again - congratulations to Carole and all involved in this programme".

American War Day II

On March 21, 2003 I sent this to friends and family:

"Day II is a little quieter here in San Francisco. Following almost 1400 arrests yesterday, the protesters seem to be focusing on the Financial District rather than
my end of Market Street. Reports are of only 100 arrests so far today.

Take care out there!"

War Day One

On March 20, 2003 I sent this to friends and relatives around the world:

"Just a quick update from San Francisco on the first day of the Iraq conflict. Driving to work this morning, it was more like "Belfast-by-the-Bay". Large squads of riot-gear clad police at highway exits, police and Coast Guard helicopters hovering low over the city, fighter jets on "Combat Air Patrol" over the Bay and bridges.

Throughout the day groups of well-organised protesters have moved around the city blocking road junctions for 30 to 45 minutes and usually moving on before the police snatch squads can move in. (See picture.) Traffic is almost at a standstill thoughout the downtown and financial districts.

As the ground attack seems to be going forward over the Kuwaiti border at the moment, I suspect that the demonstrations will increase tomorrow. One quote I heard was that if the protests continue either the war will end or Martial law will be declared.

I'll sent more later unless the tear-gas begins and gets into the building here."
