In 1948, the London publisher Rupert Hart-Davis published an edition of Slocum's "Sailing Alone.." as the first volume
of a "Mariners Library". By 1963, forty-seven volumes had been published. Many classics of small craft voyaging had been made
available to an eager post-war audience.
Among the many attractions of this series were the jacket illustrations for about half the volumes by Winston Megoran.
This English artist specialised in maritime and naval themes. Information about his life and work is available here on a site maintained by a member of the Megoran family.
I have assembled an (almost) complete set of the volumes and have placed thumbnails of the Megoran covers in the
list. Please click on the thumbnails to open a new site and new window with full scans of the covers.
In the mid 'Sixties, Rupert Hart-Davis reissued the series in a uniform red and white cover, sadly without the Megoran
illustrations. By the late 'Sixties, the rights had moved to Adlard Coles who again reissued the series in the same red and
white covers with the addition of another title: Eric Newby's "The Last Grain Race" as number 48. (Thanks for the info, Frank.)
I have seen some references to a "New Mariners Library" issued by Rupert Hart-Davis in the 'Eighties. Also, Grafton
Publishers issued a paperback version of the Mariners Library around that time. I believe it contained most of the original
titles but with some substitutions.
