To the east of the town
of Sřnderborg on the island of Als in southern Denmark, on a bluff overlooking Flensborg Fjord and the distant coast of Germany,
stands a simple monument commemorating the day the war in Europe ended. On May 4, 1945 the Allies accepted the surrender of
all German forces in northern Europe at Lüneburg Heide. This picture was taken in June 1979.
