Hunter S. Thompson, R. I. P.
Hunter S. Thompson is dead of a "self-inflicted" gunshot to the head. At 67 years of age, the reports do not yet
say what drove him to this. Details may emerge or we may be left with speculation from what we know of him through his writings.
Somewhere, I have a dog eared copy of "The Great Shark Hunt" which I carried far and wide through many strange
times - squats in Camden, plastic fork fights in Athlone, festivals at Lisdoonvarna, tents in Thalkirchen, cliff tops in Thera,
trains halts in Skopje, rainy morning ferrys from Liverpool.
I hope he has found peace being a reporter on the great beyond.

Clutching at straw polls
Reuters reported this from today's testimony before the US Senate Armed Forces Committee:
"Iraq's elections showed that U.S.-led forces are not fighting a nationalist insurgency but an "unholy alliance of old
terrorists and new terrorists" trying to destroy Iraq's newly forming government, Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz
said on Thursday."
Poor Wolfie. Does he not recall the Westminister Election in Ireland in December, 1918! That was a poll with large turnout
against a backdrop of an accelerating nationalist revolt. To see any election as indicating the absence of nationalist resistance
is being blind to history.
