"...HELLP is not felt to have lasting liver problems. The elevated enzymes should resolve...."

Q:  I had HELLP 6/1994 and delivered a healthy son.  I was not so good.  But now I have liver enzyme results that continue to be 48.  They found "fatty deposits" on my liver and tell me it might be from HELLP.  I now have to go to a specialist for the elevated enzymes that have been 48, 36 and now 48 again in the last 3 months.  Would HELLP syndrome cause some kind of permanent damage to my liver that would cause these enzymes to constantly be high?

A:  HELLP is not felt to have lasting liver problems. The elevated enzymes should resolve. You may have had some degree of liver problems before your pregnancy. Elevated liver enzymes at the level you are describing are not too serious. It is important that your doctors determine whether or not you have autoimmune hepatitis - this may require a liver biopsy. It can be treated with steroids. An inflammatory condition like autoimmune hepatitis could have predisposed to HELLP.
