go crazy from the pain, and he discovered the HELLP syndrome but did not really give me much information. He just said we needed to induce immediately and my baby was born at 34 weeks. The past year has been bad for both of us. No one ever mentioned side effects from HELLP, but my husband and I think I am different from before. Our baby would not sleep more than 15 minutes at a time for 10 months and has just recently slept the night through. Are there changes to my baby and myself due to HELLP? I can't seem to lose weight, I feel exhausted and I have no concentration now. Has anyone else experienced this?
From Sara closs424@comcast.net In September 2004 I gave birth to my first child. I was only 19 and I developed severe preeclampsia - blood pressure with a diastolic over 100, protein in urine and severe swelling. I was also diagnosed with HELLP shortly after being hospitalized for the preeclampsia. I was complaining of really bad pain in my ribs on the right side and then I vomited. About 10 minutes later the placenta abrupted and I was rushed to do an emergency cesarean. My daughter is absolutely fine now and so am I. I wasn't allowed to go home for awhile because my platelets were so low and I was getting an infection (probably from surgery), and also lost vision during labor and had massive blood loss.
Now that you know the background of my situation.... my husband and I would like to conceive in the near future. The doctor says it would be fine to get pregnant now, but I worry about the chances of it all happening again. My daughter was born 7 weeks premature and that was just devastating, not to mention what I went through with massive blood loss and the vision problems-which are fine now. I just worry about it all happening again. I know the risks are higher for a teenager who is pregnant. Is one year older really going to make that much difference? I have no history of either disease in my family but I still got it. I was wondering if the chances are greater for me to get it again and go through the risks all over again? Please help me feel more comfortable about having another child SAFELY.
From Carolyn danabelize@yahoo.com I had help syndrome two years ago. Since then, I have been diagnosed with Hashimotos disease, high blood pressure, partial complex seizures and tachcardia. My health is still out of control and the doctors have never heard of HELLP and have no comprehension what role this played in my problems. My first attack was two weeks after the c section. I actually started seeing the flashing lights five days after birth. I have been hospitalized probably five times since - TIAs etc. Any info is coveted. Hashimotos is where your body produces antibodies to destroy your thyroid. At the time when my toxemia started I was in Central America as a missionary. They told me at that time they couldn't deliver the baby there as he would die. My protein was increasing by the minute, I was in labor but we had no choice but to get on a plane and head for the states. We made it to Hershey Pa. (24 hours later) By that time my platelets were 33,000. I am grateful that my baby and I are alive. I know my body has been damaged but I am not sure if it is vascular or neuro or both. When I try to talk to the doctors they say HELLP syndrome was over when they removed the baby, but I know that is not so. My seizures started five days post partum. I was healthy before this. I can still feel the vascular spasms that I had when I was pregnant. My condition keeps worsening. At this point, reading puts me in seizures. I appreciate any information. I am thankful to have found this web site.
From Julie juliehanson4@hotmail.com Almost two years ago, I was diagnosed with HELLP. I was rushed to the hospital where I was put on magnesium sulfate for two days, along with steroids, before having my son, Noah, was delivered by c-section at 29 weeks. He was only 1 lb. 15 oz. I'm proud to say that he is a very healthy toddler about to turn two years old.
My husband and I have just recently thought about maybe trying for another child. However, the fear of HELLP has had me trying to find as much information about the disease as possible. I really appreciate the website you two have set up and any information you can provide me.
From Catherine c.higgins4@btinternet.com I was 29 years old when I developed severe preeclampsia at 32 weeks gestation. Lucy was delivered by emergency C-section in November 2002. During the c-section I experienced a sharp right side pain below my ribcage, I was told a day or two later that I had an abruption and also that I had developed HELLP. Things were pretty bad at this stage and I needed blood transfusion of 6 pints. I remained in the hospital for two month. During this time I developed a large hematomia measuring 12 x 8 x 4 cms, also a large plural infusion in right lung which later collapsed and needed drained. The fluid was red in colour measuring 950 mls. 2.5 years on, I am still suffering from fatigue, headaches, migraines, right-side pain, rash on nose/cheeks, also hair loss and puffiness. Is this all to do with HELLP or were there other factors involved?
From Linda smitty1212@charter.net Hello! I have a four month old who was born from a HELLP pregnancy. We would like to have another child, but are somewhat reluctant. Is there anything that I can do prior to getting pregnant to reduce my chances of getting HELLP a second time? Thanks!
