Q: I had an emergency c-section when delivering my now 5 yr old due to HELLP, and fortunately he and I both did fine after the initial shock. During my 2nd pregnancy I took the baby aspirin and was watched carefully for signs of HELLP. Nothing came up, however 6 months after my daughters birth (2 yrs ago) we discovered she had suffered a stroke in utero. After exhaustive blood work she and I have come back with being hetero for a blood clotting factor MTHFR.(I read on the website that someone else mentioned blood clotting factors and having tested pos) None of my Doctors seems to be able to make the connection to the 2 pregnancies, but I know there is one and I'm wondering if Dr. Easterling might be the person to help me piece this issue together and help me determine what if any medical conditions exist. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so very much.
A: Strokes in utero are very rare. I do not believe that the stroke is directly related to your history of HELLP. Being a heterozygote for MTHFR should not place you or her at risk. Taking aspirin should not be a problem. I cannot connect the two either.
